I've implemented the horizontal drop down menu discussed recently in
this newsgroup, and it works nicely under Galeon and Mozilla, but
not IE 5.0.

Here are the problems:

Under IE 5.0, the there is no drop down menu functionality at all.

I wanted to implement an alternative stylesheet for IE, but my
link to it is apparently broken. What is wrong with my link? I'd
rather use this method to reference a local set of styles defined for
IE, but don't know if that can be done.

In galeon and Mozilla, the initial "D" in the text paragraph is styled
to be large and red. But in IE, it appears as a normal D. Any idea why?

I enlarged initial letters of the main menu heading works to be
x-large. In IE, they appear much larger than that (200% larger rather
than only 25% larger). Is there a way to correct this inconsistency in
the main style definition, or must I rely on a set of IE styles to
adjust the size?

In the search facility, I have the text input field set to size=40. In
IE, it is about 25% smaller than that, even though both should inherit
the "smaller" font size as the basis for calculating "40".

My aim is to have a red line at the bottom of the 640 pixel-wide body
area, but in IE the line extends across the entire window. Unclear why
this is happening.

The drop down menus cross over this line. That does not both my eye,
but do you find it offensive?

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to improve the overall
aesthetics.

Which drop down menu? It's only one character wide in Opera 7.52. If you
still want the menu, you should at least make subpages you can go to when
clicking the main categories on the menu, i.e. Create links for "The
world", "Asia & Oceania", "Africa" etc. That way the site won't be totally
unusable if you can't use/see the drop down menu.

Unfortunately, the links to subpages are there :-(. The top level,
such as "The World" brings up a submenu, in this case, a menue
starting World Historiography, World Retrospective History, etc. And I
just tested these links again on line, and each takes you to a sub
page (you can't use the return links on those subpages, which do not
point to "test.html."

If I understand you correctly, you see only the first character of the
drop down menus.

Sorry to follow up on myself. I had abandoned opera years ago when
they asked me to pay again, and my old registration number no longer
works on its current version.

But I installed it and discovered that under Opera, the top menu size
must extend to cover the submenu in order for the submenu to work. I
uploaded a fixed version:

and now the menuing and links work properly. However, under opera, any
submenu that extends down past the area covered by the top menu
disappears. That is, I still have the same problem as before, but in
the vertical dimension. Not sure how to correct this except by an ugly
hack (add one or two additional additional menu items that are left
empty), but otherwise things are working.

Not only, but inoperative. For starters, it is not immediately evident
that there is a menu. Not all bulleted lists are menus. Links should

Those menus are unusuable (at least in Moz 1.7). After hovering "The
World" a sublist appears just to the right, and when I try to chase
down the 2nd, 3rd, etc. with the mouse, the sublists for the *lower*
main menu items appear, and The World sublist disappears.

I see whole sublists, but can only activate the first of each. Please
try something different.

The menu is inaccessible via keyboard, so the site will probably be
inaccessible without a mouse, unless of course the user disables CSS.
