PS6: Combining 16-bit images

PS6 here...

How do I combine 16-bit images, as in copy a part of one 16-bit image
into another?

I know that 16-bit support in PS6 is very rudimentary but, surely,
there must be a way (or at least a workaround) to do this most basic
of functions!?

Don.

P.S. And while we're at it, in 8-bit mode, is there a way to copy a
part of one image into another without a new layer being created?

Use the Move tool to drag one image into the other image's window.

Don, I am able to copy parts of a 16-bit image into another in PS CS.
Make sure that your source & target images are the same bit-depth. In
other words if you use 16-bit, do so all around with the images you are
copying over. If they are 8-bit when you open them, just click Image,
Mode, 16-Bit to get them to convert to 16-bit. If you want just a piece
of an image, my suggestion is to select that piece and drag it over
using the move tool (once your piece of the source image is selected
with marching ants around it, your move tool will turn into an arrow
with scissors). It will create a new layer on the target image.

As far as copying a part of an 9-bit image over, use the same technique
as above. Let it create a new layer on top of your existing layer in
your target image. Once done, link the two layers and from the layers
menu select Merge Linked. From the layers menu (assuming that your
copied over layer is directly on top of the layer you want to have it
with, select Merge Down from the layer menu. That will solve your problem.

In my post just before this one, a typo of 9-bit image is there. Please
note to make correction to 8-bit image. Thanks.

He's using Photoshop 6! Photoshop CS can use layers in 16 bits, so
copying and pasting 16 bits images is possible. Photoshop 6 does not
support layers in 16 bits.

Unfortunately, the Move tool doesn't work in Version 6.

Don.

Hi Leo,

That doesn't work in my version (6) but I found a very clever
workaround...

It's quite convoluted and involves exporting images as RAW - so I
won't go into the gory details, unless someone else is interested, of
course.

That's pretty much what I do now but I was just wondering if I could
skip that step completely and copy directly into the layer, but
apparently that can't be done.

Thanks!

Don.

Yeah Sorry about the mixup with version Don. I am glad that you
understand. I felt that "Johan" may have had an issue with my mixup by
his exclamation point. Anyway... Sorry again. Glad that I can help
with other stuff. Thanks again.

Nothing to apologize for, Leo. I'm very grateful you replied and
offered to help. A slight oversight regarding version number is no big
deal.

I don't speak for Johan, but I'm sure he didn't mean anything with the
exclamation point other than just drawing attention to the version
number (might be a cross cultural misunderstanding). He's been very
helpful in the past too.

Don.
