Up until now I've been using an older version of LViewPro (1.b2 - for Window
s 3.1) for quckly opening up
.jpeg files.  Unfortunately though, many newer files won't open up with thi
s, and I need a new viewer,
preferrably one that opens *quickly* with little overhead or clutter.  I mai
nly will use it as a way to
look for specific .jpegs in a folder.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

i use acdsee classic for 90% of image viewing
its fast, and along with having support for PSD files, the thumbnail view is
one of the quickest i've used... you can get trials of later versions as
well, but they tend to be a bit sluggish

Freeware:  Irfanview

Those are probably the only two things that get used as much or more
than Photoshop on my system.  8^)  I have Irfanview associated with
JPG because it's fastest to view.  I use Thumbs for organizing and for
conveting psd to jpg because it does a better job than Photoshop.

Irfanvview would be my first choice. http://irfanview.com It's Super
fast and supports most formats, even movies!

Someone also recommended I try SlowView which is now Mediafile Assistant
(MFA) and is no longer free!

That's true, but I find my XP system is always pausing to re-generate
the thumbnails, which can be annoying when I am browsing folders with
a lot of pictures.

Even though I'm now using Photoshop 7, I still use my old copy of
Paint Shop Pro v5 to browse folders with non-work-related pictures I
don't intend to edit, like photos from Halloween or the last vacation
trip, etc.  Probably because it was my first really effective
thumbnail-based picture browser.

You might have thumbnail caching turned off. I think it's Tools > Folder Options[color=dark
red]

as long as I don't leave it I can scroll up and down through hundreds of
pictures and it doesn't pause.
