I have a new job producing an association's membership directory. The membe
rship is sorted through
an Access database. Trying to figure out the best way to move forward with
this....has anyone done
this? I have the creative suite. I would prefer to do everything in Illy a
nd then drop into ID.
Anyone have any experience in this sort of work flow? Also, any good books
on graphically designing
this sort of project?

TIA!

Is this a website or an application that sits on someone desktop?

You first have to consider that content is king, so get your arms around the
content to be managed, then determine how it should be displayed, and
edited.

I prefer InDesign for this task. I'm doing this now for two groups. It may
sound like a lot of work, but typically takes between fifteen minutes to
half an hour.

1) Print sorted roster to PDF. Single column layout
2) Save PDF as Word Doc and do any needed spelling or last minute
editing.
3) Place Word Doc in predefined 3 column template
4) Change publication date in footer
5) Print it (if I'm printing) or Export as PDF for e-mail distribution.

Final notes:
PDFs are password protected against editing, but printing and commenting
is allowed. I've never used them in this way, but PDFs could be posted on a
website and the same protections are in effect. Nice, neat and not too
complicated.

I should have added that the text is placed unformatted and all formating is
done through InDesign. It did take a while to perfect the template, but
since that is reusable, I did not include that in my time estimate above.
