PSP 8 vs 9 vs X: To upgrade or not to upgrade

Hi All:

I currently have PSP 8.1. I was thinking of upgrading to PSP X, but the
impossibility of downloading it from the USA (I'm an Aussie) at an
upgrade discount, and some posts I have read here, make me think I
ought to move to PSP 9.

Any suggestions?
Thanks you for your time.
Yours,
Garry

It depends on how badly you want the additions in PSP 10. If partial
16 bit per channel support or a poorly implemented and documented
color management appeal to you, then by all means read the Corel PSP
10 newsgroup to gather opinions and suggestions.
http://tinyurl.com/2pt9o has its address and directions for
registration.

Otherwise, PSP 10 contains little more than PSP 9. (Well, it has
different bugs.) Most writers to the NG think its browser is
inferior, as do I. With a bit of shopping, PSP 9 can be had cheap at
US$20 - US$30 from eBay stores or Amazon every few weeks.

If you can find it, upgrade to 9.01, but steer clear of
X. I took that route, but immediately returned to 9. Corel
has made such a mess of the whole thing, it's a
disgrace! Nothing is the same!

I don't necessarily disagree with you about the merits of X over 9 - but why
would "Nothing is the same" be an issue?

Personally, I'd have preferred lots of new tools and features, which would
mean lots of things aren't the same.

I have to second Sally's perspective. You don't want things to
be "the same" with a newer version, although I suspect treker
means he/she can't find stuff that was available in versions
previous to X, and X did make that kind of difficult.

That said, the biggest problem with v.X is simply that it doesn't
provide even "several" new tools/features that make it worth
purchasing or can't be done quite easily - and often better -
with the tools in v.9.

v.9 provided a few but quite great extras from v.8 - CA Removal,
DCNR, and Selective Undo come to mind, and it didn't look the
same as v.8, but was easily worth the learning curve regarding
the interface changes because of the usefulness of the new tools.

Just my 2 cents (Cdn) worth, adjusted for inflation 'cause I'm
wordy.

Regards,

JoeB

I bought X because I got it for $30 (US) after rebate, but there is no
real imperative to go beyond 9, which does most of the same things. I
like the automatic features of X that are damned by some here, but if your
only need is for quality, 9 provides that, and you ought to get it
cheaply. I'm trying to remember if the patches were as large as the
program, however. My guess is that X's successor will be more
interesting, after PhotoPaint and it cross-polinate.

Hey, it just proves Corel can turn any software, they acquire, into crap.

Just go to the store and find the cheapest graphics software, like
Brendan does, and it should be good enough. Let's face it, only amateurs
use PSP. Even though Jasc Software, Inc. felt they could give Adobe's
Photoshop a run for their money, they failed and went out of business.
Not a sound investment.

No, the patches weren't as large as the program, but Windows
displayed the file size of the installed patches as if it was a
total of the program itself and the patch, which did confuse
people.

PSP sales are down. No imagination required.
