Before i re-install - is this fixable?

E.g. any image - choose the Selection tool.
Press "O"
Selection type is Rectangle
Feather on 50
Antialias ticked (these settings I may have altered)

Apply - and the marquee jumps larger and is rounded.

Any help appreciated.

User error isn't fixable by reinstalling the program. You have to
reinstall the user. Go reinstall yourself or at least read the help.

Why press "O"? This attempts to run the Object Selector tool.

Lookee, lookee, feather is 50. What does feather do? Experiment to find
out.

Set the feather to zero. The marquee is larger and rounded because it's
feathered.

Mostly right but O would be tools options pallet in Pre Psp 8 talk

But yes 50 feather in & will increase the area by 50 all round and then a
corner gets stretched and becomes rounded.   It used to be the only way to
get rounded rectangles was to make a selection the resize it larger
