760px or under seems to be a kinda standard width for most sites I have
checked.

800 width is pretty much the standard at the moment, but when you are design
ing
and creating your site, make the width more ike 770px to account for scroll
bars on the left. But be aware that a lot of users don't have their browser
maximised anyway so you may get scrolling whether you want it or not.

Here's the definitive word. You don't want it to be so wide that people say
"oh, that's too wide". You also don't want it to be so narrow that people
say "why's it so narrow". I'd think that something between those two
extremes would be just about perfect. Maybe a little more, or maybe a
little less for good measure.

The point here is that there is no number anyone can give you, in the
absence of some information about WHO is going to be looking at your pages.
If it's the general public, you would select one width, and if it's a
specific demographic, you might want to select another width. Read this
link, make a choice, and go away happy....

sounds like 770 is the best option - still it seems to small when loaded up
on a browser.....i guess many users have smaller monitor sizes or older borw
sers maybe....

thanks for replies - H

Or, like me, prefer a smaller browser viewport so that you can see other
things on your desktop (1280x1024 screen with a viewport ~750px wide).

A trick some people use is to define a background color that will fill
up the monitor space on either side of the web page that is coplementary
to the background or another prominent color of the web page. That
way SOMETHING will expand to fill the viewport if it is quite wide, but
your lines of text won't stretch to become unreadable, which would be
the danger if you are using the 100% table width solution, for instance.

If you want to get into more esoterica on this, look for min- and
max-width css specs and do a Dogpile or Google search for Jello mold.

thanks for replies again - all very useful especially the article, the only
other thing I was going to ask is what about making the page align to the le
ft
-is that a better idea than to centre it - ??

the reason i say that is i assume that it is better to have a little more
space on the right hand side to 'absorb' any surplus space, (if that makes
sense) -

basically what i am saying is: is it better to align to the left or to centr
e
it - ? thanks, H (p.s. i know it is really a personal choice but what would
be
considered more standard....)
