My ISP (for whatever technical reason) insists that my main site page,
formerly index.html, be named default.asp. This is fine when my page is
uploaded, but when I try to view this page locally in DW via Preview in
Browser, Firefox and Mozilla refuse to open it...they don't know how to
handle it and want to have DW open it. This sort of defeats the purpose
of previewing the page in the browser. Safari and IE have no problem
displaying this local file. Any suggestions?

Hi Charles,

I would have a tendency to agree with Murray. If you can't change your ISP y
ou
can look at a few things on your machine.

You could have a local configuration issue. I assume you are on a Windows XP
or 2000 machine. Have a look at (XP) Start -> Control Panels -> Folder Optio
ns
-> File Types:

Select ASP -> Click the 'Advanced' Button
Make sure you have "Edit with Dreamweaver" and "Open".

In Dreamweaver: File -> Preferences -> File Types and Editors
Make sure .asp is not listed in the "open in code view".

In File -> Preview in Browser make sure all the other browsers are listed an
d
are marked as 'secondary'.

As far as the Index.html vs default.asp is concerned. I am not sure why your
ISP is directing you to do this. Generally, on an IIS server (by default) th
e
server will (in this order) look for:
default.asp
default.htm
index.asp
index.htm
and will open the first file it recognizes. This file list can be easily add
ed
to (such as adding 'index.html') or be re-ordered. To have you change the na
me
of your initial page from index.html to default.asp seems unnecessary. Of
course default.asp will work on the server. ASP pages can have straight HTML
and have no problem. Just seems odd and unnecessary.

Also make sure that the other browser preferences will open/use .asp files.

It is good to hear you are trying to be so thorough, I'll bet it is a pain t
o
design to so many browsers.

Thanks for the information! I'm on a Mac using OS 10.4.2, but I'll see
if I can apply your suggestions Mac-wise!
