I'm not sure if there is already one on this topic; I need help with
integrating sound into my Dreamweaver site. I am wanting my web page to ope
n
and play a recording. Then, at different times through the duration of the
recoding, the text/pictures will change. I am wanting to do this without us
ing
Flash. So if this is possible; please let me know.
This can be done through *fake streaming* an avi or MP3 with an onload commm
and
but the audio will still be a bandwidth hog even if cleaned and compressed
properly.
What is the reason for not having the sound in an .swf? I assume your
text/pictures ditty is in flash, no?
I am designing a website for my father for his up-coming software release an
d all. I will be designing his homepage. I have been asked to see if I can
do this without using flash.

Don't, don't do it. If there is one thing that drives people away from a
site is having sound automatically playing.
The only reason you should have sound on your site is if you are a band.
Why is it that 99.9% of users are driven away from a site with sound, but
the other .1% work in web page design?
Okay, I understand what you are saying. I am hoping to incorperate it into
my
site then. It doesn't have to immediately begin when the vistor comes to my
site. Even if it is an option to go hear it; I'm really wanting to be able
to
incorperate it. Now, if in all circumstances this is looked down upon, I wi
ll
abandon this idea.

Making it an optional choice is definately the best way to go. Your
original comment talked about it playing as soon as they entered the page.
As long as the page isn't set up to automatically play music its good.
Just drag the plug-in icon into a cell (Insert > media > plugin) and load yo
ur
mp3 into into it. Make sure the plugin is a hundred pixels or so accross and
at
least 16 high, and the controller for whatever media player the viwer has
installed (Quicktime / windows media / real (shudder) etc) will just show up
there and play either automatically (with the added parameter "autoplay=true
"
or not "autoplay=false". :)

Mmm - unfortunately, flash is actually (IMHO) the best option for this ..
:-)
I agree. It's amazing how ANNOYING those midi flies and other such sounds
that automatically start playing are. Give the user a choice in this
matter.
