it is empty!! [Not the main menu one, the one in the character pallette]
Has anyone had this happen to them?

Try going to your Windows Fonts folder (e.g. C:\WINDOWS\Fonts) or opening
the Fonts applet of the Windows Control Panel. (You may need to switch to
Classic view from Category view to make the applet more obvious.) For each
font file you see in the applet, open it to verify that it's intact and
valid. If you find any that report being unreadable, remove them. Once
you're done, re-launch Illustrator to see if your problem is solved.
I just wrestled with another program and the solution ended up being the
removal of an invalid font file. It certainly wasn't the most obvious
solution; so, if this helps you, great.

I am on Mac it is in the System Folder.
On Windows search for Adobe Illustrator Prefs.
It really is a cure sometimes.

Apologies, search for a file called AIPrefs, it will be in a different
place depending on the system being used. You will need to close
illustrator first then find the file and delete it then restart
illustrator. When illustrator restarts it automatically recreates the
file with default settings, so before you do anything check any settings
that you may have changed so you can reapply them i.e. positions of
palettes, rulers on or off, type of units.
