Hello
I am very new to Illustrator and have purchased a video tutorial
However the host says
Please hold down the star shape, and press the down arrow key for 4 pointed
star, do it again for a 3 pointed star...and I only get a triangle while he
gets a 3 pointed star
Is this normal? Is it something to do with my settings?
I am using the PC version of Adobe Illustrator CS

This what I think he emans:
1. Make a star
2. With the star tool selected click on the star
3. In the dialog box that appears you see the radius and the number of
points, there are small arrows left of that number that you can use with
the mouse.

Now, a "star" with three points _can be_ a triangle;)
Play with the radius.

Radius 1: 280 px
Radius 2: 140 px
gives you a triangle

Radius 1: 280 px
Radius 2: 70 px
gives you a three pointed star.

Actually, for some reason pressing Ctrl to elongate the "spikes" seems to
have fixed it

silly me!

you were right and I was right

Sorry but that does not happen with me. Can you be more specific?

Um okay
Remember what I said...I clicked the down arrow key so I could get a three
pointed star like the Host of the video tutorial said but all I could see is
a triangle, and you said

Radius 1: 280 px
Radius 2: 140 px
gives you a triangle

Radius 1: 280 px
Radius 2: 70 px
gives you a three pointed star.

If you click the star and not release the mouse button and press Crtl (or if
you have a Mac it's the "option" key..I think) and you drag the star
"points" or "spikes" in an out this is changing the point/spike size,
elongating them or squishing them (i.e short fat star, long elongated star)
My default three pointed star (I had been playing with that tool earlier)
was a triangle...by elongating the star "points" you can see the indentation
and thus it becomes a three pointed star!
When you reach the shape you want, you release the mouse button and the Crtl
key

If I'm not being specific...remember I'm a total newbie...brand spanking
new!

Well no problem in being a newbie:)

It is actually the Command button on the Mac (usually). But it does not
do it with me, unless......unless I select the star with the open arrow
tool (Direct Select) of course. But then you do not need the Command
key, it will just change shapes of the points of the star, using the
eye, because you can move the direct selected anchor points to whatever
you wish.

Am I missing something here?

I'm guessing the 3-pointed star changes from a triangle to something more
like the Mercedes emblem with the changing radius.

Hi steg, this may help understand what is going on. Some of the keys
only work while draging.
