Hey Group


I've been using Photoshop for years, and i like playing around inthere, and
i consider myself pretty good in it - even though i dont know anywhere near
everything there is to know about the wonderful program..

But now i started playing 'round in Illy... and... well.. My goal is to be
able to make logos like the Atland logo at:

http://www.pvcomics.com/atland/

It's got kind of a three-dee effect to it.. Sometimes you see this effect on
other logos, where the 'mass' going into the distance is not grey, but
another color..

And i'm wondering how this is done in illustrator.. How do i copy a text
layer, to stick the same text ontop of it, bigger or smaller, and then link
the two together - creating this type of three-dee effect by "connecting the
dots" from the different joints to eachother..?

I think I see what you mean.
I guess the way to do it is make the letters "Atland" in your example.

Then use the Enveloppe option (it is late, is it under Effects??) and
make that small bow in the logo. Until you are happy. Maybe use some
angle. Fill it with the needed colors. Now the "shadow".

Copy it and paste it to the back, fill it with black. Play around to
scale it, probably mostly horizontal. Position it the way you want it to
be. I am just talking from the top of my head, need to see it in front
of me, but I think this method will give a start for sure.

No real need to connect the anchor points, just make the black shadow.
Later on you can of course group the whole logo.

Steg, how does one (without a lot of drawing ability) go about making
the swirlies on both sides of the logo. That has always stumped me, and
in all my searching have never found a tutorial on how to do it.

That is a whole other question.........I believe it is doable with the
calligraphics tool, which is now a brush.

I would draw the object with the pen tool (just make your regular
curves) and then change it using the calligraphic brush, that will get
you what you want. You can find the calligraphic brushes on the top of
the Brushes Palet. Try them out. Select the drawing and click the brush.

Of course you need to make the pen drawing first but with stuff like
this I am sure you know how to deal with that.

I just made a simple one, look:

Steg, thanks...not as difficult as I thought as long as I have something
to use as a pattern to trace. Like I said, not good at drawing. I have
some old leathercaft mags. that I can get swirlies from.

But this is the entire point of my question... How to do this with the
connecting of the anchor points, so that it looks like one element rather
than an element with an opaque drop shadow !

Uhhhhhhhhh

Mode: Normal
Opacity:  100
Color: Black

That should do it? Maybe the Filter>>Drop Shadow is what you want. You
can click on "Create Separate Shadows". That is slightly different than
the one under Effects.
If you do that you can select the shadow separately with the Direct
Selection Tool.

Is that what you are looking for?
