Hi all,

just had my first experience with Paintshop Pro, testing
trial version 9 (PSP900enTR.exe). Great! I like
the "one touch photofix" tool, which is far superior to
a corresponding tool in Photoshop Elements 8 trial version.

The text tool and the browser, I don't like!

* Text tool * Am I just too inexperienced, or can I
use different fonts and effects such as glow, artistic text etc,
as in the simple MS PictureIt that came with my computer?

* Browser * Can I switch to a mode that shows
all file characteristics such as when saved, picture
when taken, etc.?
And can I tell the browser to show the complete
file names, un-truncated (increasing the thumbs size
is tedious)?

Thanks,

Siggi

You can set the font you want in the Tool Options Palette (F4)

At the top of the Browser Window are two tabs Find and Info;
click on Info which gives various data and EXIF data if available

I think you mean Elements 3, not 8. There are other
things that are far superior to Elements if you do
any serious image editing, which you may no be familiar
with yet. Here is one, for example:
http://campratty.com/4tooltours/kz/bge1.html
If you are into digital photography, you should take a
look at the Digital Camera Noise Removal and Chromatic
Aberration filters too.

You can do all sorts of text effects in PSP but they are
not canned pre-manufactured effects as in PictureIt. Here
are links to tutorials about things you can do with text:
http://www.psplinks.com/content/Text_Effects.html
Take a look at the rest of the site, since it indexes
about 14,000 Paint Shop Pro tutorials. The main page is:
http://www.psplinks.com/.

Click on the Info tab.

Just hold the cursor over a thumbnail and a whole bunch
of different information will appear, including some of
the stuff you asked about in the previous paragraph.
To be able to use this feature, make sure you haven't
unchecked Display Tooltips Over Thumbnails in File >

Thank you Kris, for this detailed answer. You are right, I meant Elements
3, and I am an absolute beginner. That is why I am testing trial versions of
Elements2 and Photoshop 9, and the full freeware version of GIMP to find
out which one to buy or to get free, respectively. I will look at the sites
you suggested.

Re Browser, I had figured this out already, but find it clumsy to hold the
cursor over every thumbnail when I want to scan a lot of pictures before
selecting one to work with attentively.

Many thanks again,

Siggi

What you are going to find is that each program has its
own strengths and weaknesses. Elements is stripped of many
components present in its big brother Photoshop. PSP, on
the other hand, contains many if not most of these missing
components. That limitation in one program and strength in
another may not become apparent until you gain some
familiarity with image editing. If I were in your shoes,
I'd not make a decision too quickly and I would ask some
more questions of people who have used both programs. You
can find such people in the Jasc User Forums:
http://www.jasc.com/community/forums/?
If you choose to follow up with questions in the forums,
I'd suggest you specify your intended use for the program
when you request feedback. For example, do you expect to
use it only for photo correction or will you use it also
for web site creation? Additionally, give some indication
of the learning effort you would want to put into mastering
either program. That is likely to get you some specific
and sensible feedback about people's likes and dislikes
concerning the two applications and you will be able to
make a better choice in relation to your needs, both in
the short term and for the future, and be happier as a
result.
