I'm currently using PSP 8.
While viewing some recent postings on the Corel buyout (something that reall
y
doesn't concern yet), I was alerted to the Photoimpact product. Downloaded a
trial and - while there would be a major learning curve after being comforta
ble
doing things the PSP way for so long - I was quickly and major impressed by
the
text tools especially 1) the deform and wrap galleries and 2) the kerning
control. Regarding the former, is there any way to easily duplicate these
effects in PSP? I only know about a rather clumsy method of creating a vecto
r
shape and laying text along it. Not easy and not flexible. Any other tricks
in
v8 or v9?
Regarding the kerning issue, PSP 8 really sucks in this area. PI adjusts wit
h
each increment. It's almost impossible to do proper kerning in PSP 8; the
adjustment will sometimes result in text shifting (not kerning) and kerning
changes will occur only at certain adjustment intervals and also be imprecis
e.
Have things improved in version 9?

Well, it at least now can read EXIF information. Luckily, we had Windows
XP do that for us, before PSP-8 and 9.

You can warp raster text in PSP in all sorts of ways using
the Mesh Warp of Warp Brush tools. PSP does not have canned
envelope effects such as those in WordArt or PI.

The kerning control is much finer in PSP 9. It is also possible
to pick the level of antialiasing and to warp text along a
curve.

GIMP had warping before PSP-8 & 9.

Good enough for prepress? PC Mag doesn't seem to think so.

Nobody cares who had what years ago. PSP had an image browser and a
floating histogram palette before Photoshop. Does it make any difference
now?

Obviously, if someone needed the specific capabilities of Photoshop for
their work, they would use that. In fact, they wouldn't have to buy it,
because it would be in their employer's budget.
Why should home users pay for prepress tools when all they're doing is
spitting out photos on an HP inkjet or editing eBay pictures?
