Black & White

Let me start by saying I'm totally incompetent to be using this
software. (Now, we got that out of the way).

That said, I need to create a simple logo image at 600dpi resolution
that is "black and white" (not greyscale). I can easily draw the
image, but need to fill certain areas with black. When I do this, it
wants to convert it to 16M colors, which will not work since black and
white has been specified.

Can anyone give me some guidance (I know, the best thing to do would
be to hire someone who knows what they're doing, but I'm looking for a
second best I guess).

TIA

Well you don't mention the version your using however:
Let it convert. Do the drawing. Convert it to monochrome when you are done
. Save the image.
The reason it wants to convert is that certain tools will only work with hig
her resolutions.

Asking a question, as you have done, is the way to change that.

I can't answer the question with the information you have given.
Why, for instance, can you not have a 16 million color image (i.e.
one potentially having as many different colors as there are
pixels in it) and restrict the actual colors in it to only black
and only white? How are you trying to "fill certain areas with
black"? What tool are you using that gives you the message about
converting to 16 million colors? How did you "easily draw the
image" and what tool did you use to do so? What is the original
file format of the image you are working with? Is it a GIF file
or something else? Have you tried the Color Replacer tool, for
example? Are you using the Flood Fill tool on selections? Are
you painting with a brush? Do you have vector objects in your
image (which is the normal way to make a logo)?

This should be very easy assuming you describe where you are
starting from, how specifically you have set about things so
far, and why and where exactly you'd like to end up.

Welcome, D Ray. We all began sometime, right?

I'll guess that you started with an image of color depth = 2 colors
(1 bit), then drew a black outline. You can work with that, keeping
the 1-bit depth.

The drill is to select an area, then fill it with black. Choose a
selection tool to fit the need:

To fill a white area that is completely surrounded by black, select
the Magic Wand tool. In the Tool Options palette (F4 brings it), set
Mode = Replace, Match mode = RGB Value, and check Contiguous. Click
in the white area to select it.

The Selection tool is good for quick shapes: rectangular, rounded,
etc., picked from the drop-down menu on the Tool Options palette.

The Freehand Selection tool lets you draw a selection of any shape.

Selections can be sloppy when overlapping the already-black parts.

Once selected, use the Fill tool to fill the selection with black.

Finally, remove the selection with Selections > Select None.

Alternatively, you could use the Brush tool to paint black where you
want, varying its size and shape as needed.

Write back if you get stuck.

Or, more accurately, certain tools will only work at higher
color depths. In PSP, resolution only has to do with how an
image is printed.
