Using PSP8, if I have an oblong image of a curtain rod with ornamental ends
which I wish to make wider by duplicating some of the content in the centre
by a defined extra width, how would be the best way of achieving this?

TIA

One way is this. Select the center and one end of the rod.
Promote to a new layer. Deselect. Pick the Deform tool, which
will put a box around your center + end object. Hit Ctrl-arrow
(using the arrow that points in the direction of the end) and
count pixels. Or, hit Ctrl-Shift-Arrow and count tens of
pixels. Or, create grids or guides where you want and use
snap to grid or guides when moving the object. When finished,
erase the original end of the rod on the layer under the
one you displaced and merge the two layers. Repeat the
process if you need to more than double the length of the
center section of the rod.
