Is there a way to set up a selection area and then move it around?
I.e., I have a 1600x1200 photo and want to crop to 1024x768 by sliding
an outline around to frame the best part. I know I can do the math and
use 'canvas size', but it'd be more convenient to set up a rectangle
and push it around.

Right click and drag will move a selection box. Another thing you
can do is make a crop box or preset for the size you want, and
drag that around with the left mouse button. You can select
'maintain aspect ratio' with the crop box if you will be
resizing, but want to it proportional.

Just in case your terminology is mixed up: use the crop tool, not the
selection tool.  A selection made with the crop tool can be dragged.
If you make a selection with the selection tool, then dragging it moves
the image instead of the crop area.

Not if you drag it with the *right* mouse button held down. If
you do it that way, then when you have the area you want to crop,
you can do Image>Crop to Selection. Either way works.

Ah hah! "Crop tool." I'm moving from PSP7 to 9-beta, and unfamiliar
with the newer gadgetry. At least no one can tell me to RTFM, because
I don't *have* one. :-)

PSP 7.04 user

If you click the right mouse buton while using the selection tool your
selection will disappear. To move a selection use the mover tool with
the right mouse button. That's the four-way arrow tool. Also, once a
selection is created, you can move the contents of it by using the
shift or crtl keys. Holding both down will nudge it by ten pixels.
Holding shift will move the selected area one pixel at a time while
replacing the area with the background color. If you move it by
pressing only the ctrl key then the area will not be altered and
pressing shift after ctrl will move it by ten pixels.  Anyways once
you have your area selected press shift-r to crop to selection.

Method 2.

Double-click the crop tool. Enter your demensions in the dialog box.
Move this selection with the right mouse button.

Well 7 had a crop tool too But 8 and 9 are easier to use for cropping to
photo paper sizes no need to do the math's

Yes, use the right mouse with the Mover tool.

Then you are using the wrong tool. Don't use selections.
Use the Crop tool instead.

That would be the least useful way to do it.

Strangely enough, there was a Crop tool since at least version
5 and probably earlier than that.

Then read the Help instead. Help > Help Topics > Contents.
Help > Help Topics > Contents > Editing Image > Cropping
Images has what you need to know. Reading the Help will save
you a great deal of time and posting here.
