Error message when trying to save gifs.
|
|
| Tina Clarke 2006-09-12, 10:26 pm |
| I got a new hd and reinstalled IC 1.5 which I've had for years from my fp98
disc.
Whenver I try to save an image as gif I get the following
Cannot save image. Image format filer initialization failed
I press ok and get the error message
Cannot right image. The disk my be full or write-protected or there may be
insuffienct memory.
Whenver I try to insert a gif I get the error message
Image file "name-of-file.gif" is stored in an unsupported format or format
variant.
Which used to happen sometimes before on my old hd.... it depended on where
the gif was from... I used to take a screen shot to get round the problem
and save as a gif.
Any ideas on how to fix? I've had the problem for a while .. I've been
saving graphics as bmp files and then when I insert into FrontPage or
Expression web I just save as a jpg or png.. for inserting I do a screen
shot or save as a bmp file first to insert into ic.
Thanks Tina

| Sounds like you need to replace the .gif graphics filter. i don't know how,
though.

| Do search for ( *.flt ) without the brackets. Find and select GIFIMP32.FLT
rename it to GIFIMP32.old and then reinstall software. This version may vary
according to Office program that is installed. Mine happens to be Office
2003.

oops sorry I forgot i'd posted this...
I'm on XP no office 2007 I do have Expression Web and FP 03 installed .. I
did have all the fp's (inc fpe but excluding fp97) but the first ctp of ew
wiped em out I only reinstalled fp03 for the time being.
I could just try reinstalling I guess.

| Dear Tina,
This happened to me, too. I figured it out.
The problem is that we both installed the Expressions (beta) graphics
program, didn't we? Sure we did.
If you re-install Image Composer, the problem will be solved until the
next time you start Expressions. The good folks at Microsoft use a
string in Expressions start-up that basically tries to nullify other
..gif filters (to enforce their own malevolent desire for image editing
supremacy), but only really succeeds against our old friend, Image
Composer 1.5 - maybe the best program they ever wrote. You may quote me
on that last part.
Uninstall Expressions, re-install Image Composer and perhaps your other
image editors until Microsoft stops playing graphics dictator;
especially with beta software. Good luck; all the best.

Your right I did .... I can get rid of it and put it on my beta machine
....and one of my other graphic editors would not install again ... I can
take the lot off and start again...
Can I take you literally on the quoting? I want to post this to the
expression graphic ng... and ask someone to bug it for me too since I'm not
on the beta for egd. Also I want to post it to my frontpage list and some
other places and blog it. I know there will only be a small user base that
it affects both but it's important dash it all ;)
Thank you for figuring this out, I sorta knew it was something like that but
had not really reasoned it out...it's pita but I can work around it.. and it
makes me save everything in bmp... then convert (actually expression web
converts from a bmp to a gif or jpg depending on what it thinks it should be
when I save the page ... it does this automatically ... though I end up
saving as a png which has less bytes mostly... but I found out that if you
keep resaving a jpg it loses quality so moving around as a bmp first is
better... I like to save to one location on the hd for a backup then insert
(i have less trouble with red xs with this method) into fp or ew .... I
can't rememeber if fp resaves automatically as a gif or jpg I've been
working mostly in Expression Web which I think is the bees knees.
Thanks again:) So ok on passing this around? I might edit it slighltly

| Hi Tina.
Yes please, report this as a bug for Expression products. I did for Office
2007 Beta 2 and the group who own that filters was to solve this issue. (I
don't have the latest version yet to check, though). If we stay silent,
nothing would probably happen!
Jan ;-)

| Cool info Ludwig, this is the only practical thing we can do! :)
Actually on XP and Office 2007 the filters got broken, however I run ImgComp
on Vista and Office 2007 without troubles, until couple of days before. I
don't know why, but suddenly, the filters stopped working (no
installations).
It seems still more and more new software will update these filters so that
they become incompatible with ImageComposer. But I disagree a little with
Nicholas. As all of us, I love ImageComposer and I use it every day and I
don't have any other graphical software installed. However, these filters
are ten years old and I accept that they need to be updated to support newer
stuff and I also accept that it might require to break-up the compatibility.
And I don't want the ImageComposer to hold down this development.
It took them eleven years to make this cool piece of software so maybe, one
time, they will do it once more. :-))
On the other hand, the fact is, that if you make compatible-breaking
changes in libraries, you should rename them to not break up the software
which uses them, that's true.
What we can do is 1) let them know it breaks their software. Since these
changes brake PhotoDraw as well I think we will get the required attention.
2) if everything fails, at last we can try to crack the ImageComposer to use
filters which were shipped with it. Maybe some simple trick will do, like
moving the filters directly into imgcomp directory, or some registry hack.
