Problem using variable to load URL...Please help

Using Flash MX

I am trying to use a variable assigned in a text file to direct the
loadMovie action to the correct folder to load the movie from.

loadVariables("vars.txt", "_root");
loadMovie("http://www.mysite.com/client/" + _clientNumber
+"/pic0.jpg","picholder");

Here is how the variable was assigned in vars.txt:
&_clientNumber=0000000053

Here is the error message:
Error opening URL "http://www.mysite.com/client//pic0.jpg"

so obviously the variable is not being concatenated as it should. Any
suggestions appreciated...
