Your method worked, but my suggestion would have been to remove the
glove from your selection first. In other words, if you selected the
coat and included the glove (or for that matter something like a purse
of a completely different color from the coat, or a bare hand), use the
CTRL key with your freehand selection tool to remove that from the
overall selection.
The general brighness of the glove, of course, is much different from
the brightness of the pink coat. With the coat you were replacing a
light color with a darker one, and would move the right handle Output
slider in the Levels adjustment to the left. Once you do the coat you
can select the glove and change it to, perhaps a lighter color.
Because the glove is darker than a lighter replacement color you would
use the left handle and move it to the right to average the brightness.
