| HI1
I owuld be very appreciative if anyone could tell me why all of my PSPs
(7-8-9) keep gettign cut off after I upload them. This is something that
has recently happened and, I don't know what to do. I've ran virus scans,
disk cleans, and, even defrag my computer-and, not forgetting to insert all
of the PSP disk to run a repair-all to no avail.I don't know what else to
do-and, this only happens with my PSPs I don't have PSP10-'cause everytime I
get this something always happens to my PC and,I do want PSP so badly that
I'm afraid to order it.
Also, my PSP 9 keeps sending me updates-and, the last time I'd rejected
it-do you think this is the reason?
Please help me?
Thank you so much!

| Donna, do you mean that your Paint Shop Pro programs fail to start?
Try creating your own icon or starting up one of them from the programs
folder.

| Whenever I click on PSP7, PSP8 and PSP9-it pops up;but, only for a few seconds before automatically closing off.
I, now unstalled PSP9( thinking that this was the main problem-because, PSP now refuses to open) and, re-installed it-and, it's the same thing-all over again1 This is really upsetting!

Aaargh! Click on PSP 7 etc. where? Pay careful attention to what
people are telling you and don't click on anything and ignore any
desktop shortcut or Start menu item to do with PSP. Instead use
Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder that contains the .exe
file for the relevant version of PSP (e.g. psp.exe for PSP 7. Then
right-click the file name and choose Open. See if PSP now runs
correctly.
The reason you are being told to do this is the following. The
shortcuts created for PSP are generally actually pointers to
the Microsoft Installer, which then starts PSP after "checking
that everything is OK with the installation". Unfortunately the
Installer can get itself confused and cause all sorts of problems.
By starting the PSP executable directly from the folder in which
it resides you can bypass any Installer issue. This might not
solve your problem but at least we can discover whether or not
the Installer is to blame.
Apart from that, think carefully what changed on your computer
since things ran well. Did you install some new software lately?
Have you visited some new website lately? Have you downloaded
some stuff or other recently? That might be a clue to the problem.
Run a scan for viruses. See if you can go back to a previous state
of your system where everything works by using the Windows System
Restore Point capability.

I've done every thing you've told me to do-and, I stil lhave the
problem-and, I really can't remember if and what('cause I know I probably
did) remember what new software I'd downloaded.
All, I know is that for (1) I'm unable to do 2 things at the same time
eg-pull up one program and click on another such as, IE..
(2) I am unable to pull up links that people send to me, with out it, too
cutting out- and (3) I'm getting SPAM junk I do not want whenever I xlixk
on internet explorer. I have AdWare and Spybot-which scans and not find this
problem-I'm totally frustrated!
Do you think a system restore might work?

I suggested it because I thought it would be worth a try but
you don't have to pay attention to me :) Your computer is hosed
in some way that isn't primarily related to PSP. It sounds
like you'd be best off getting a professional to look at the
computer and to sort out whatever problems exist.

Donna. I've found this problem on computers that I've fixed.
Here's a test to see if your computer is in serious trouble and need
experienced help:
Click on Start, Run
type in: msconfig
and click on OK
if msconfig does NOT start, you are in need of serious experience
assistance, as you have a virus that is seriously embedded.
if msconfig DOES start, then just click on cancel and maybe someone else can
help you out.

Its worth a try at a good clean up Empty the Temp internet files and also
your temp files. In XP you find them on the system directory typically C://

| Hi!
This is what I've been doing.
I've been running programs like AVG,WinCleaner, CCleaner and,Disk Cleanup in
my System Tools folder-all to no avail.
I've even downloaded new SPAM block programs eg SPAM doctor-all to no
avail-all says cleaned.
I've even unstalled my PSP7-8 and 9 and re-installed them-and, still these
are the only ones that are still repeating teh same problem-the first 2
cutoffs me off, after 2 minutes-after I pull up a graphic to crop and
re-size. And, ,PSP 9 is hopeless-I'm unable to access this,at all.
Do you think. a .dll is corrupted or possibly used in anothe program,
making the PSP .dll in active?
I read of a problem with another user who has the latest version of PSP 12
that the problem could be the NvCPL dll-Could this be the reason for all of
my woes?
Mind, you-I'm only having trouble with my PSPs

My msconfig is OK and, there's nothing in that, seemingly would cause this

It sounds like you might have a Rootkit infection. My daughter had one
some time ago that caused her to keep getting SPAM when she clicked on
links in Internet Explorer.
Unfortunately Virus Scanners and Spybot cannot pick these up at this time
as the Rootkit actually hides itself.
AVG do an Anti Rootkit tool which is free - see the link below
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/download...ootkit/us/crp/0
Rootkits are relatively new and you can thank Sony for them. They
invented it as part of their Digital Rights Management.

No I did not mean virus and cookie cleanup programs but emptying the temp
folders Physically as in selecting all and deleting then emptying the
recycle bin. Lots of files build up in those folders and can and do effect
various applications in particular IE

Not true, I think. Sony used a rootkit to hide DRM stuff. However,
rootkits formed the basis of malware for a long time before that
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootkit). The name comes from Unix
systems, where the root account has maximum privileges (i.e. it
is the superuser or system administrator account). It was the
correlation of Sony's behavior with malware and the stealth
install that was responsible for much of the fuss about Sony's
actions. Interestingly, Mark Russinovich was the one who
discovered the Sony rootkit and his web sites (Sysinternals and
NT Locksmith) have subsequently been acquired by Microsoft, a
firm believer in DRM. The NT Locksmith web site was removed as
a result, possibly because it included password recovery software.
(Presumably, removing the software is considered better than
fixing the poor MS password implementation.) The source code to
Sysinternals software is also no longer available.

| Ah, thank you so much to both of you and this is very interesting; but,
afraid to try it, especially if it does produce malware.
I've recently received a correspondance from Corel's tech support
guy -John Francis who gave me intructions for my PSP X2, which I'd
downloaded hoping that
this download would resolve my problem with all of my PSPs. He said::
"1. You will need to delete the following files from this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<<Username>>\Application Data\Corel
thumbnails.db
ImageDB.db
LastDBFilter.PspCache
2. Run Paint Shop Pro again."
These didn't work because there were no thumbnails.db,ImageDB.db nor
LastDBFilter.PspCache in the specified Corel folder-only 1 labelled PSP
Photoshop which only an empty folder labeled 12
I'd noticeD that after the download , x2 made an addition Corel folder with
all of it's components in it. I'd double check my PSP9, 8 and 7-and, they
had all of the components, as well.
I will definitely checkout this Root kit.
Thanks for sharing.

| These instructions from Corel apply to PSPPXI.
For X2 there is now a folder "Thumbs" instead of thumbnails.db
Also the locations are different, but depend on whether you are using XP or Vista.

| I'm using XP and the download went to it's own Corel folder in my Program
files folder-there is no Thumbs folder here.
I just don't unerstand why I would have the same problem opening this new
PSP as I do with my own PSP9-which has only worked before. and, getting cut
off on my PSP7 and 8-these are all too strange!

| Have you tried using windows search to find the files you were instructed to
delete?

| Yes-and, they were not there-just empty folders of where they were supposed
to be.
All PSPs have ther own folders-in program files, with all of the components
in them and, here, too-there are no files as listed below.

Stop and think for a bit. You said PSP 7, 8 and 9 don't work on
your system, i.e. they start running and then they stop ("all of
my PSPs (7-8-9) keep gettign [sic] cut off"). Consequently,
whatever this Corel guy told you to do about PSPP X2, whether you
can do it or not, isn't going to fix the problem. Specifically,
PSP 7 works completely differently than PSP 8 and later (using
differently organized DLLs) because it doesn't use scripting.
The fact that every version of PSP dies after you start it points
to a problem other than with PSP itself. You can wish it otherwise
and keep insisting in this and other newsgroups that it is all
the fault of PSP, but it isn't. Your computer is hosed. None of
us can divine how it got hosed and what specifically is wrong with
it, and you don't have the background to explain it all to us (not
to mention that being off-topic for a PSP newsgroup). You need to
find someone knowledgeable to get his or her hands on your computer
and to clean up the mess I'm afraid.

| Ah, gee thanks so much for the input-and, I've suspected so much
Today, I'd decided to do some isolation by unstalling all and re-installing
only PSP7, since I can pull this up, if only for a short time before it
times out on me and cuts out... Hopefully, I'll find out what is causing my
problem. Keep
your fingers crossed!
