| I have a copy of Tadjio's Photo Script for PSPX. Can it be used as-is
with X2 or must it be modified?

Yes! I have just tried it ;-)

PS I haven't used it myself for ages, so I'll have another look at the detail :-)

Right, I've had another look at my script.
As it stands, it does 3 things:-
1) Automatic Contrast Enhancement (ACE)
2) Edge Preserving Smooth
3) High Pass Sharpen
Nowadays, rather than ACE, I tend to use the Levels Tool
and in particular the Auto Contrast (or Levels) button
with Options set to 0.01% Limits and 100% Strength.
The best way of describing it is that it gives a better cleaner, brighter contrast.

Are you sure that's the best way of describing it? What does it
mean? Is this an advertisement for laundry detergent? :)
How about providing a pair of examples illustrating what it is
that you see and describe in this way? Include the original too
so the change can be judged.

| Hi Vanessa
Thanks for your enquiry.
It's great to hear that people are using my scripts
even down under :-)))
I don't have a script right now, but one could be produced :-)
You know of course that you could produce one yourself?
I'll have a go later today, if the Rugby semi-final doesn't get in the way...

| Having written a script that I have posted, called "Tadjio's Levels Script"
I've re-considered its content.
In particular, I don't feel that Clarify set at 1 "washes whiter"
anymore, as it used to in PSP9 :-(
To be honest, I don't often use Clarify nowadays.
I also hesitate whether it should be before or after the Levels Contrast step.
In addition, I am a little unsure about the last step: High Pass Sharpen.
In my version2 of my "Levels Script", I have made these 2 steps "Default"
so that the user can skip or modify them if desired
whereas the Levels Contrast step needs to be "Interactive".

I don't believe you when you say that the only difference is the
replacement of Auto Levels by Auto Contrast Enhancement. The
comments in the script say:
# This script provides "one-step" photo enhancement by running the
# following commands in order:
# Levels Automatic Contrast Enhancement
# Clarify
# Edge Preserving Smooth
# High Pass Sharpen
# Based on Kris Zaklika's old PSP OneStepPhotoFix and SQWalden's
# CleanUpAct and ETCulling's AutoFix.
I've attached the result of doing Auto Contrast Enhancement,
Clarify, and Auto Saturation Adjustment. They are nothing like
what you claim these steps produce but they are very comparable
to the results of the Auto Levels version of the script. The
two sets of steps wash equally white, with the original version
producing slightly lighter images than the Levels version.
I included the Auto Saturation Enhancement step here. You say
in your script that it isn't necessary. Indeed in this case
it had a negligible effect. However, if the Auto Contrast
Enhancement produces very large increases in lightness (e.g.
starting from a grossly underexposed and extremely dark image)
this step may be of some benefit. The same dark image processed
through Smart Fix or the same Smart Fix algorithms disguised
as Auto Levels or Auto Curves is likely not to be enhanced as
much as is possible with Auto Contrast Enhancement and may
well also be oversaturated after that smaller enhancement.
I'm afraid you are mistaken about something you are doing, or
your notes about what you did are incorrect, or Corel has done
something bad to Auto Contrast Enhancement in PSPP X2. In any
case, I don't think it is appropriate (pending some believable
evidence) to claim PSPP X2 does laundry better than did PSP 7.

You may see a difference but unfortunately this isn't the result
of what Tadjio says it is.

In fact, if you look at the result of the "Levels" script and
compare that script to the original, you will see that the poor
child's face has started to resemble a beetroot and that the
image has acquired a pinkish cast (especially visible in the
clothes) that wasn't there originally. In fact, the saturation
of everything has increased far beyond the saturation of the
original image. That goes not just for reds but also blues,
yellows and greens.

Heaven knows what you are doing. A lot of people claim that
at small settings "Corel Clarify" works not too differently from
"Jasc Clarify". Why is it different in your hands?
> To be honest, I don't often use Clarify nowadays.

First adjust the global contrast (Auto Levels) then adjust the
local contrast (Clarify) otherwise you won't know what local
contrast to adjust.
> In addition, I am a little unsure about the last step: High Pass Sharpen.
I've told you about this before. You are using High Pass Sharpen
to adjust local contrast, not sharpen, because you are using a
Radius of 10. It makes no sense to adjust local contrast twice.
Choose which filter you are going to use and decide on the result
you are trying to produce. Don't just string commands together
that you got from someone else.
