Script newbie needs versatile calendar scrip
|
|
| Jim Merrick 2007-09-26, 3:16 am |
| Hi Folks, I was sent here by a kind lady who seems to look after us lost
souls.
I have a basic calendar script that functions fairly well but with a few
short comings.
I need one that allows full font control as well as additional options for
text placement ie month, etc.
I use the one in MS Publisher and it works great but the program is
otherwise redundant.
Thank you

I need.

It's already got font control, and it being vector allows for altering
individual parts like positions and different fonts.

What does it lack? If you were to say specifically, perhaps
someone could tell you how to modify the script. It's not like
we are knee-deep in calendar scripts around here so we can keep
lobbing different ones at you till you find one you like :)

| I am not really into the script thing so do not know just what they are
capable of.
In short I need a calendar script that will immulate the choices that are
offered in various MS programs allowing the choice of B I U versions of
fonts and the placement of text ie the month year etc in boxes that can be
placed and altered as needed to match the page.
Had hoped to find a script that would do the job and possilbly save that
setup for the next project.
Perhaps I expect too much albeit realizing most of this work is provided
generously by others I understand.

I bought Calendar Builder last year, it's not expensive and does everything
I want it to do :

| Thanks Joëlle,
I will probably just continue using MS Publisher as it's transparent
templates work fine and it does a good job with text and likes .png files..
I just thought a script would allow me to stay in PSP and eliminate a
program with yet more file formats to contend with.
PSP is no whizz banger but is easy, inexpensive and pretty quick on most of
the office tidbits I do. I fell for the lemon XI upgrade and will get X2
directly.
The program I really miss is the older Word Perfect programs that did most
of these things, including calendars (no layers of course) quite well in a
word processing program. It was the best graphics publishing program around
and had the first practicle Presentation program that I knew of.
Take care

You can open a script with a plain text editor like Notepad and
look inside it to see what it does. The commands have long names
that, at first sight, look unwieldy and discouraging. At a second
glance, however, the names become self-explanatory.

If you look at Joske's calendar scripts you will find in them
commands that place text. These commands have parameters that
set bold, underlined etc. text. Whenever one of these text
characteristics is marked App.Constants.Boolean.false it is
switched off. Changing that to App.Constants.Boolean.true will
switch it on.

I think the way that Corel changes the behavior of text from
version to version without much documentation is starting to
exhaust or discourage the people that could do something about
this.
| |
| Jim Merrick 2007-09-27, 6:20 pm |
| I think you have a point about the Corel changes.
One time when I opened the Joske's calendar script it had all sorts of
options. After that one time there were only the basice font size choice.
So perhaps Corel has struck again or I need to study this script some more.
Thanks for hanging in there.

We thoroughly tested the Calendar scripts in 8, 9, X, XI and now X2. They
work without fail in each session.
It's impossible to have only one font size choice, because you can fill in
your own size and the script has no choice but to obey your input.

I want to make it clear that I wasn't commenting about any of
your scripts. My comments were related to the lengthy discussion
in the scripting group about inconsistent font sizes and new
font parameters with changes in version.

Maybe you could help out with the bolding, italicizing and
underlining if time permits. (I assume strikethrough is not
relevant :) I had a quick glance at a script called (on my
system) CalendarYear. It has some flags of the form user_bold
and user_underline which can be set but no corresponding
user_italic flag. (The text commands have Italic parameters,
of course, which could be changed.) I have the impression there
is something about the graphic design of the output which led
to a decision not to have a user_italic flag but I haven't
looked carefully and may well be wrong. Certainly at your end
you guys would know more about what is going on in the script
and the intent behind it, as well as how best to modify it.

size, fill or not fill and away it goes.
Only the one time did it offer other options. I'm sure it is a hum dinger
but something is not working for me.
Thank you

This is just my opinion, but I don't feel Jim has any clear idea of what he
wants ;-) I do know he would like the choice of boxes around the dates, and
that's described on the page. All else at this point is, as Jim says
himself, probably a matter of using a suitable Microsoft program.

Just as spandex suggested, edit the script and change the first appearance
of user_bold and user_underline for the purpose you want it to be, just as
it is described in the script.
Editing is not a hard job, is it?

| Dunno, never edited a script. I may though now that I know I can and time
permitting.
Most of the reason I frequent newsgroups is knowing they are populated with
good intentioned and generous people and even some quite knowledgeable ones.
Much of our time is devoted to work and not hobbies or more of us would be
proficient at playing with PSP and scripts, etc..
Thanks to you folks I can take a bigger interest in these things as
evidently they are not rocket science and even I may have the ability to
make some adjustmetns as I go along.
Had the script in question continued to run it's full course I would not
have been on here. The way it runs now in the abreviated path it has taken
left me somewhat adrift. I do not doubt the authenticy of the script as it
is among the very first to surface in a search or conversation. It is just
not working in my rendition of PSP XI at this time.
I know what I want it to do: That is to plaster a fully edited transparent
calendar on a PSP canvas for further graphics enhancement..
Will confide in you good folks how my "editing" turns out.
Thank you

Just one thing to be careful of. Edit the script in a plain text
editor, not a word processor - Notepad will do - and be very
careful to preserve the white space as it was originally since
this space is used to decide how to interpret the Python
language in which the script is written.

Jim, did you download the script from our site? It's the only place that's
guaranteed to give you the full and untampered-with script. Why not delete
the one you have and download it again from the site - just in case
something's been changed in whatever way.

| You can use any calendar program that you wish including the one in Word.
Once you create the calendar, do a screen print and save the calendar as a
jpg, then remove the background and do whatever you wish to do with it in
PSP.

No, no, no. Pressing the PrtScn key places a capture of the screen
in the Windows Clipboard. From there it can simply be pasted into
PSP with Edit > Paste > Paste As New Image and there is no need to
save any file. If you are going to save a file, then save it in
a lossless format like TIFF or PNG and not in a lossy format like
JPEG. When you save as JPEG image information is permanently thrown
away and the image in the saved file is no longer the same as the
image before you saved it. In addition, JPEG uses a block compression
scheme. Artifacts associated with these blocks and the discarding
of image information make the steps you mention below harder to do.
