Author Script help on plugins

Ok everyone, my first question. First, can Paint Shop Pro exist happily
with the same plugin both as 8bf and also in Filters Unlimited (ffx)? If
this is so, let's say I am editing a script and want it to work with either,
or. It will need to check to see which one is there, then go ahead and use
the one that is there. How would I script this. Also, what happens when
the script finds the same plugin, in both 8bf and Filters Unlimited?

In general, PSP since version 8 hasn't liked duplicates of resources,
whether they are filters, plug ins, or more PSP tool-specific items.
I think, just my experience, it takes the first instance of the item as
listed in file locations as it goes down the list. You'll also get a pop
up warning of the duplicate named item(s) on first use of the filters
right after re-/building the plug in cache.

[this behavior caused much unrest among users when Eye Candy released
the free version and a demo version with the same named but different
filters.]

As far as programming it, the experienced folks should be in at some
point. :) They'll likely want details on the version(s) of PSP you will
support with this script.

[quiet is misleading.... those are footsteps and other sounds from lots
of lurkers]

I thought I read that duplicate plugins aren't too good. I have psp 8,9,10,
and 11 but use only 8 for scripting so it will work with all versions. 9
seems unstable, and 11 concentrates mainly on photo editing, so I am happy
with 8 and 10. Thanks for the reply, do I hear footsteps? :)

hmm likely just sniffles and breathing in the background as folks read
over our shoulders.

While we wait... I have 7-10, and use mainly 9. They did issue patches
for 9 and 10. The patch for 9 really helped here.

note you must install the patches in numerical order.

They released a patch for 11 as well.

You'll need to make sure any of your script users are current on
patches. Odd things happen.

One footstep. Well, one and a shadow.

The shadow is to suggest that, if you post a query and somebody posts
their reply under yours, then to keep things in order as others read the
posts it is helpful (and good newsgroup etiquette) to keep posting under
the replies. Bottom posting (as it is called) ensures that someone who
hasn't read previous posts can start from the top, see the query, and
just keep reading downward (like you read a textbook or other paper
information source) to get the gist of what started the thread and how
it developed.

The main footstep is with regard to PSP9. In what way is it unstable
for you compared to v.8 or X? Also, how do you find that v.XI
concentrates on photo editing more than v.X does?

JoeB

Can't help you with the scripts Jane but why would you want to have two
copies of the same filter. Any that work in Filters Unlimited I have
imported into it and then remove them from the main filter list....Pat

Just a cautionary note. Things changed when Corel took over. Script items
labelled Jasc.... were changed to Corel.... so there is not complete forward
compatability without some change. I am not a script expert (just a user) so
cannot give you details.

I am not sure what your intending to do, but you could do a try of the
plug-in in the effects menu and if you get an exception use filters
unlimited. This is assuming the plug-in is in one or the other locations. As
I recall the latest version will allow scripting.

I was checking out the pspscripting in the scrapbooking and photography
forum, but as my interest is totally for making graphics for stationery I'm
not so sure I could incorporate the other scripts in what I need. That is,
I want to do this so I need that code. Thanks for the links on the patches.

Sorry if I zigged when I should have zagged. I'm still trying to get the
hang of newsgroups :) When I put version 9 on my computer it sometimes
crashed but 8 and 10 never did. With the patch it probably be ok, but I
just never used it enough to get used to. Version 11 came with all these
photo fixes, and while very nice, version 8 was nice enough to use most of
the time. If I had only one version to use it would probably be 11 as I use
it often for photo correction. But 8 is like a comfy old shoe.

I was thinking more along the lines that scripts in later versions simply
won't work in earlier versions. I think there is a way to alter them
however.

I was thinking more of some people have a plugin in Filters Unlimited and
others have the same plugin just as 8bf. So I want to use proper code so
the script looks for either or.

While my scripting probably won't be made available to other people, I do
want the proper code in there. I have a backup computer which I am going to
put psp on, and have Filters Unlimited on one computer and 8bf in the other.
If I use the scripts on each machine, I do want them to run without errors.
You would think there would be a snippet for this. All I have to do is to
find it :)

Look in the "Scripting for Script Authors" manual and look at the try/
exception statement.

Yes scripts written in newer PSP's like 10 and 11 start with PSP app import
and prior use JASC app Older from 9 and 8 work with 10 in most case except
those adding text. Jasc referred to text size in points when it was actually
pixels From 10 onwards we can add text as pixels or points which is size
based on the ppi of the image. This means text size from 9 and 8 script will
be undersized unless the image is at 72 ppi

Very easy to code, Jane - I use this all the time in my scripts. For
example, using the Simple filter Blintz, code the script this way:

try:
# Simple_Blintz
App.Do( Environment, 'Simple_Blintz', {
'GeneralSettings': {
'ExecutionMode': App.Constants.ExecutionMode.Default,
'AutoActionMode': App.Constants.AutoActionMode.Match,
'Version': ((10,0,3),1)
},
'DefaultProperties': []
})
except:
# < I.C.NET Software >_Filters Unlimited 2.0
App.Do( Environment, '< I.C.NET Software >_Filters Unlimited 2.0', {
'GeneralSettings': {
'ExecutionMode': App.Constants.ExecutionMode.Default,
'AutoActionMode': App.Constants.AutoActionMode.Match,
'Version': ((10,0,3),1)
},
'DefaultProperties':

})

You will have to record the script step both ways, and indent one version
under the "try" part of the code, and the other version under the "except"
part of the code. This works very well. In the above case, if the .8bf
version is there, it is executed and the script continues, skipping the
"except" part of the code. On the other hand, if the .8bf version is
missing, the script will drop into the code following the "except". If the
user has Filters Unlimited 2.0, the filter will be applied - note that this
is true, even if the user does not have the Simple Blintz filter imported
into Filters Unlimited. The presence of Filters Unlimited 2.0 is sufficient
to execute the step. Finally, if the script user has neither the .8bf
version of the plugin, not Filters Unlimited 2.0, the step, and consequently
the script, will fail.

If the script finds the .8bf version of the plugin, it will search no
further and will use that version. That's how the try-except logic works.
Let me know if you need more help on this, Jane. Suz

Ahh ok.
Scrapbooking may still give you ideas for creating stationery backgrounds.
October challenge referred to JP Kabala's Opal Text which can also be
used to create an infinite variety of tiles.
http://jpkabala.com/paranormal/abfab.html walks you through installing
and using the brushes.

The plaid discussions were also interesting for those creating
backgrounds without extra filters.

Seems this is going to be quite cumbersome, with a script for each plug-in
you want to use.

It is, Willy, but it works. You can code the Filters Unlimited (FUn) part
without the code for the filter (using 'DefaultProperties': [] at the end
of the step) - this will open FUn, and the user has to find the correct
plugin, or if the script is running silently, it will use the last filter
used within FUn, which might not be a good thing. I usually use the code
saved from running the filter I want, even though at times that code gets
rather extensive. So it all depends on what you want to do. Suz
