| Does anyone have a script that will take a photo and make it look like a
cartoon. I have seen several scripts that do this "kinda". I asked the
same question in the graphics group and got a couple of scripts that are
good but not exact. Anyone help?
Thanks

When you posted this question before you were asked to provide
an image or a link to an image which looks the way you want your
result to look. You have ignored this request. It is stupid for
the same people who answered your last request to indulge in a
random guessing game of "I think I might know the image Tim
wants and I'm prepared to create or hunt for a script to make
that image just on the off-chance it will please him". I think
it would be helpful if you put a little effort into your question
and provided an example of the image you want. Please do it.
Assuming you want to take an arbitrary photo and convert it into
a simple cartoon like Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry or Road Runner I
can tell you right now that no such script exists or can exist.
The reasons for this should be clear if you spend some time
thinking about it. The main reason is that neither image colors
nor edges in photos always correspond to physical objects in the
original scene. I also provided some links explaining some other
problems when you asked this question before. Perhaps you might
want to glance at them again.

i was wondering about the same thing, i think. is there a script
available that will provide that 'screened' look like a comic book has?
i had a pic and was gonna post it as an example but i deleted it by
accident. basically the whole pic is turned into a series of dots that
make up the picture.

| Carrie,
Could you include a source site and name of the script? This is a topic
that seems to have more than one person interested.
Thanks.

| It was written by tracy pori and released with a series
of PSP 9 scripts on the list.. If you are interested email me
cosmo at osmo dot com dot au. Not being my script I do not
feel comfortable posting it here - but she did say I could give
it to the intereste - the name is -=Comic Book 9=-.pspscript
and I firmly believe it is the best of it's kind.

If the Halftone were interactive (I didn't check because I think
this is not a very good imitation of cartooning), you could set the
blend mode to, for instance, overlay, which wouldn't make the image
darker.
As I wrote in my own reply to Wijja, you could smoothe the photo
before applying the Halftone. I have a script serving another
purpose that uses Salt and Pepper, a Halftone could easily be added
if this is what you and others seem to like.
But Carrie, do you really think this is a good imitation of a
cartoon? To me, it looks like a photo overlain and partly wiped out
with big grey lines and some dots. Your actual photo looks so much
better, and I often wonder why people feel the need to overlay a
clear photo with effects that are neither here nor there, or render
a rather strange picture. But I suppose that's just me, the one with
the critical eye.

| Joske :o))
It does the smoothing and the threshhold
edge eroding simplifying colours and whatever else..
the problem with this image is the complex
dark trees in the background and a dappled horse.
I have tried quite a few techniques and got some mixed
and some good results - you have given me a lot of good tips
along the way.. This script is good for folks who don't use
these techniques as you can go through it interactively and
learn heaps Joske.
As an off the shelf script for general use it is the best I know of -
but I have by no means tried everything :o)))
Also it doesn't merge the layers so you can go back and adjust
a lot of the steps by changing the opacity or blend mode or
other pixel characteristics of each layer.
As for improving the image - the best thing would be to remove
my daughter from the beautiful horse :o)) I chose this image
simply as a demo because it shows how well it copes with the
simple sand and grass foreground, the great job it does with the
fenceline and the not so hot work on the trees. I was careful NOT
to choose an image that was already simple and cartoonish.
Nothing more annoying than find a promoted script as a "whatever"
only to find you need the planets to align on a full moon to get the
photo it works for. LOL and we see a lot of that and it sux..

This isn't a script, it's a tutorial (for another program!). I haven't tried
it yet, but looks like it should be fairly easy to translate to PSP.
http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorial/Pop-Art/9959
After the tutorial, there are users' results which are pretty close to what
the tutorial 'promises'.

Oh, good. You know I think the Halftone is a miracle filter, even if
even that doesn't make the perfect cartoon of photos :-)

I tried a few background trees and found that the Pepper and Salt
makes them nice and smooth... but so does it do the rest of the
image. There's just no easy recipe for what it takes to do a cartoon
imitation.

Oh you meanie :-) I saw your many horse portraits in the graphics
group and can tell you really love them and know a lot about them. I
couldn't pick a favorite, both the fine-boned and the sturdier ones
looked attractive to me.

yes! that's the screened look i want. thanks. now i guess i just have
to go about figuring it out. at least now i have a direction to go in,
so thanks for that. i've never been able to figure it out and i want to
make 'comic books' from the series shots we have of our kids. my wife
also does scrapbooking so this technique could be very handy.
i know what you mean about a script working across the board given the
differences in brightness, etc, so yeah, you're right. it's a pic by
pic job. i'll give it a go and see how it turns out.

I cannot find the script on my drive, I know it is saved on one of my
many discs, but when I reformatted, I did not re-install PSP X or any of
my scripts. Carrie, feel free to repost here if you still have it.

This is tracy's script :o) But I did do a fine job of posting it :)
Her stuff is inspirational I often just run through one of her
scripts (interactively) when I am feeling stuck on an image..
Is really like a recap, an eye-opener, a tutorial and a surprise
all at the one sitting - got to love it. I cannot wait for the black
and white threshhold one she has alluded to!! (hint hint hint)
There are so many fabulous script writers out there
and some of the results are just amazing.. Not only
the imagination to think it all up but the tenacity and
trouble to catch it and share it. Their generosity is amazing
and i luv'em'awl
