I've started playing around with assigning GPS information to photos. I've
found programs that will allow one to take a track log from a handheld GPS
and assign the correct GPS coordinates to a batch of photos based upon the
timestamps. I've also uncovered some Python scripts that have been written
to do the same thing using a Python interpreter. I'm curious to know if
anyone has written or is aware of PSP scripts to perform the same task.

What are the programs you found to take the track logs and assign
coordinates to photos? I have a Garmin GPSmap76CS handheld.

Barb,

First I'd recommend checking out www.wwmx.org. This website is a Microsoft
sponsored "research" project. They have freeware that you can download that
will pull the track logs from Garmin units as well as a location stamper
application that ties the data to your photos. They also have a web-centric
application that allows you to post your photos to the web with the GPS
coordinates (kind of an online GPS photo community ala myspace or the like).
You can search the database for a particular location and view photos that
others have uploaded.

There are commercial applications that exist, but after playing with this
software, I see no reason to invest any dollars.

Also check out....

http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~rakerman/geocode-photos.html
http://gpstracklog.typepad.com/
http://www.keyhole.com/GoogleEarthH...oogle_Earth.htm
(really cool stuff like the wwmx.org website)

You'll find that you will need the following freeware app to convert between
GPS formats
http://www.gpsbabel.org/

Here's a website with Garmin specific track-log info
http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/tracklog.htm

Upload some pix to wwmx and let me know what to look for.

Good luck.

Regards,

David

Thank you very much for all the info, David. I don't have time
to get to it now because we are leaving Saturday for a trip. I've
saved your post and will check it out later. I appreciate it very
much.

Glad to help
Some advice...
You don't need all of the software or know-how of using it. Just make sure
you take your GPS and camera on your trip. When you get back, you can marry
up the info and pix when you get some breathing room. If you know how to
set your GPS to record track-logs, then you'll be good to go. Oh, ensure
that you sync your camera's clock to the GPS after it gets a fix.

Thanks for the info. Don't think I will buy any more gadgets
since I already have a very good GPS and very good cameras. :))
