Howard,

Is there any chance you might be related to the late Harold Dickson of upper
NY state, forget wife's name but had 2 daughters?

Just checking; a never-ending search for classmates.

We'll be in the Almeria province, part of the larger Andalucia region.
If you look at the map, it's the very bottom right-hand corner of Spain.
We're a bit inland, about 30-40 mins from the coast.

The only downside is broadband internet connections are hard to get and
slow in comparison to here. But hey... it's sunny! :)

If you were looking for both broadband and sun my area (southern France)
would be the best place... it's sunny and you get up to 24MBps downlink and
1MBps uplink, free VOIP calls to the biggest countries, MPEG4 TV thru DSL
for 30 euros per month.

Depends if you call nearly 300 miles 'not very far'! :)
We will probably make it down to Gib some time in the future, but for
now, we've got loads of beautiful local areas to explore before we
venture that far afield.

They don't celebrate Robbie Burns night properly either.

But they do a pretty good job in some parts of the Netherlands. While
we were there, we had a neighbor, a Scot, who invited us to his
celebration which gave us our first introduction to Haggis and also
introduced us to Tatties and Neeps (a dish of mashed potatoes and mashed
Rutabagas (sorry about that!) <G> There were many other dishes, as well.

They even called on me, as a guest, to read one of Robbie's poems which
I did rather poorly. It was all served with generous quantities of
single malt "gravy" while the stereo blasted out music [sic] of bagpipes.

We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly (even the Haggis!!)..

Sounds like good multicultural fun, except maybe for the blasting
bagpipes :-) I became allergic to the sound in my early student days
when I lived in a student flat. A Scottish-Dutch student from
another flat thought we would enjoy a regular bagpipe concert in the
central hall. He'd stand there (at a pretty late hour, too) in his
skirt, piping away, the sound carrying through all the rooms. The
first time it was interesting, the second time funny, but after a
while we came to dread his arrival.

And, I have been to Edinburgh, but was always fortunate not to see
nor hear a bagpiper :-)

I heard no bagpipers when I've visited Edinburgh, either. I was there
on business, which might have something to do with it!

It was a VERY pleasant evening at 100 Seinpostduin, in Scheveningen, if
you know where that is...

Not the exact address:
http://www.nationaletelefoongids.nl...eferer=YP&Map=1
in short:
http://tinyurl.com/pgmzg

But
http://www.scheveningen-centrum.nl/...npoststraat.htm
yes, of course I do know this area as a whole. The top cards look
like they could be from the days you were there, Tom?

Did you know that there are over 5000 photos of Scheveningen on
http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=scheveningen&m=text

Oh my, and over 12,000 photos of The Hague?
http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=den+haag

(though there are almost that many of Groningen, where I live) :-)

Just... don't even go here
http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=poffertjes&m=text
I think I have to go to our own central square to get some now :-)

The location in the Telefoon link looks correct. The top cards you
mentioned were from an earlier period, but I actually found a picture of
the building we lived in on the flickr site. I have attached it.

I enjoyed the links. The pictures brought back many pleasant memories.
For a while, my wife and I considered retiring in Nederland. However,
she was concerned about the health of her parents. Her mother has never
been on an airplane to the best of my knowledge, and she thought we had
dropped of the edge of the earth when we moved there. We told her that
we could be at her house in less than a day, if needed, but she never
quite believed us. Both are now dead, but it was a major concern at the
time. Her mother died about five years ago and her father died last
summer at the age of 93.

I'm going to forward the links to my wife, who I am sure will enjoy
them, also...

Regards...

Tom

Flickr.com has become a very good source for those wanting to
(re)visit places.

Your father-in-law died at a very respectable age, I have to say. I
fully understand the worries about being so far apart. Some places
will have to stay a fond memory... it is the same for me and some
places in England I'd have wanted to live in.

I do recognize the building now that you have shown a photo. Having
fond memories of my parents (dad in particular) taking me to
Scheveningen in the late fifties and then both of the kids in the
sixties, I still cannot quite get over these modern buildings, to be
honest.
