Author Beta2 - PhotoCorrect script

Folks,

Here's another beta version of my PhotoCorrect script, having listened
to comments from Spandex (thanks), although not all of the points have
been addressed.

In this version, the image's Luminance is sampled three times... whole
image, the central area and the outer border. An average Luminance
reading is then derived and used to make a corrective brightness
adjustment. The differential between the image's luminance and
mid-luminance value (128) is then used to make a histogram adjustment
(either high or low).

At this stage it appears to be more accurate than the previous version,
although high contrast images are still problematic. I've also removed
the Colour Balance and Clarify stages, and added a flat, neutral
contrast adjustment at the end.

As always, I'll be interested in and comments and feedback.

Rgds,
Howard

Hi Tadjio,
It looks like both scripts need to be tried on a variety of images.
Like Smart Photo Fix, a one button solution to everything doesn't exist.
Maybe a mix of both.

Tadjio, I think your result was a bit better, but I tried both versions
on the same picture and the results of the second beta were better. I
think the script is a great start, and once Howard gets hold of a
problem he won't let go until it is solved.

Joelle & Tadjio,

Thanks for taking the time to check out the new beta. Personally I feel
the newer version has more going for it, due to the histogram
adjustment, to give a more balanced tonal range. Tadjio, I think the
problem with your image, although it's quite hard to tell at that image
size, is that the majority of the sky area has blown highlights, which
will ultimately affect the sampled luminance. Probably best to test with
an image with a balanced histogram (no clipping at either end).

I do realise that this will never be a fix-all script, although I could
offer the choice of modes & correction within the script, I'll probably
end up with some sort of 'strength' or 'compensation' factor to allow
the user some kind of control.

I'm still tweaking with it, especially the final stage, where I'm still
not sure whether a contrast adjustment or histogram stretch (or a
combination) is the best way to go.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Rgds,
Howard

PS Howard, I am using PSPX but I have also tried PSP9 without noticeable
difference.

PPS When I ran Beta2, there was much more screen activity, including a grey
box that stayed on top of the images for a while - sorry not to be more
scientific!

PPPS I notice you have taken out the Clarify - this varies significantly
between PSP9 & PSPX as I am sure you know. You have also changed the steps
at the end for "EXPOSURE COMP" - this seems to make the difference in my
tests.

Tadjio,

Yes, the grey boxes you are seeing is the way it is sampling the central
and outer areas of the image, new to this beta. As I mentioned in my
previous post, the final stages is the area I'll be looking at next, but
to be fair, all the 'important stuff' has been done by then. It's just a
case of getting the final contrast correct, and with what tool, with
some control without introducing additional problems.

Howard

trolljenta,

The beta I recently posted, is for PSP9 and is very much a 'work in
progress'. I did try it with PSPX after reading your post, and it worked
OK here (PSPX v10.02). I suspect ou may be trying the script with either
an image with layers, or a selected area. Anyway, I'm really just at the
'trying stuff out' stage and not too bothered about the ocassional bug.
I'll get them sorted once I'm happy with the script in PSP9. Thanks for
the feedback though.

It will not run in my PSP9 either, single layer - no selection. I tried
on two separate pc, one running WinXP and even one with Win98SE. I will
give it a try on my laptop also, but since other people here does not have
any
problems it must be something my pc's are missing.
Thanks for trying.

You SoftHighKey works beautiful, it's just the PhotoCorrect that I have
problems with, sorry....
