I think you got a great result there, Adriaan. The skin texture is a
keeper - I hope you exported the texture file so you can use it again.
As for the Face Room result not looking like your friend, the next step
would be to morph the shape of the head. That'll be tricky, but you can
probably approximate the shape without too much trouble. (If you want
to, you can zip up the exported texture file and the folks here who use
Poser could also give it a shot.)
Now you're gonna shame me into getting to work on the model of my friend. ;)

P.S. If you take another photo of your friend outside, don't do it in
bright light. Rather, try for diffuse light. That will minimize shadows.

Thanks Lori. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I would need to zip the
"obj" file and "texture" file for anybody here to be able to use the
texture. I don't know what you mean by "export". Further, the texture and
obj file would be rather large to attach to a post here.

OK, I'll correct you. ;) The only thing other folks would need is the
texture map for the face. The texture maps I have for my catwoman faces
are both about 500KB; if I increased the JPEG compression, their file
sizes could be reduced. Your texture map might be in a similar file size
range.
If you post a thread with a warning that the next post contains a large
image and then reply to the post with the texture map of the face
attached, that would do the trick. Other folks could then snag the
texture map and apply it to James in the Face Room and try morphing the
head. You might not want to do that, though, but instead work on this
completely on your own. That's cool, too. :)

The results are really cool, Adriaan, but what you're getting is a
seriously worn-out young man rather than a regular older man. Your
friend has a much different jaw and chin, his cheeks sag (as would
almost anyone's who's over 40), and his brow and skull have a different
shape. His nose is also rounder than James' default nose.
For the lower part of the face, what I would do is first adjust the jaw
and chin, then tweak the Age dial in the Face Shaping Tool palette. Then
do a render and see what you think. If the changes are going in the
right direction, then try adjusting the brow and head. Do another render
and see what you think. If those changes look good, maybe finish up with
some slight changes to the nose.
In any case, I love this face texture. :)

Well as you know I'm not into Poser, but you should know I'm really
enjoying these exchanges. They're so lively and about learning and
exchanging info. Seems you're not the only renderer in here anymore,

OK. Here goes Lori the next reply to this post will have the texture map
attached. I've zipped it but left it in the "png" file format. I would realy
enjoy your having a go at this, but I do think you'll be the only one
interested.

Ah, you saved the texture as a PNG! That may indeed be awfully big. For
purposes of finding out what parameters need tweaking in the Face Room, a
low resolution JPEG would be fine. Maybe go into PSP and resize the texture
map to no more than 1500 pixels in either dimension (assuming your original
is bigger than that) and then export the resized version as a compressed
JPEG.

Actually Poser saves the texture as a "png". Anyway see the reply to myself.
Had to go with JPEG after all. Hope the file is not too small now.

Are you sure about that? I believe I saved mine as JPEGs - although it's
possible that I converted the PNGs to JPEGs. Heck, I can't remember what I
did a couple hours ago, let alone what I did a week ago or so! ;)

Great work! However, the one question that comes to my mind is 'What
does the bump map look like?'
I should think that the skin wrinkles would work better as imverted
bumps, than just a texture.
You'll soon be teaching me how to use Poser!

Adriaan, now that I see the texture map (which you actually didn't have to
zip, since it's a JPEG), I think I know why you thought Poser saves your
maps as PNGs. I thin the file you used is simply one of the files Poser
saves when you do a render, so you can go back and compare several different
renders.
To save your texture from the Face Room, click the angled bracket to the
right of the texture preview and then choose the file type you want and
enter the name for the texture map that you want. You can save the texture
to any folder you like. You can also load a face texture file from disk by
clicking the angled bracket to the left of the texture preview and then
navigating to the file you want.

In 3d programs, you can usually supply many images to a 3D object.

There are other maps which can be applied.
A Bump Map is exactly that. Where it's light, the surface of the
object it's applied to, is lifted up, and where it's dark, the surface
is recessed. This is a subtle, surface effect. Very good for skin
wrinkles and sometimes, folds/wrinkles in clothing.
Another Map you can apply is a transparency map, which will control
the transparency of the object it's applied to. As an example, when I
needed a witches dress, I took the template for the dress, painted
white where I wanted it opaque, black to erase a jagged edge on the
helm. I've also used this to make semi-transparent clothing, such as
the pants for my OOM image (the female joker). Use various shades of
gray for relative amounts of transparency.
All 3 of these use the same texture map.
Applied similarly in the Material Room.

The attached screen capture shows the dialog you get when you click the
folded paper icon (followed by ">") that is to the left of the face
texture preview. You can navigate to wherever you've got face textures
and then choose the one you want.
In the next post, I'll show how you can then save a tweaked face texture.

Now here's the dialog you get when you click the folded paper icon
(preceded by ">") that is to the right of the face texture preview. You
can choose the file type you want, navigate to the folder you want, and
give the face texture file whatever name you want.
If that doesn't clear things up, give a shout.

By the way Lori, I should mention that each time I apply the imported or a
created texture to a figure in the Pose room; Poser generates a PNG texture
file located at Runtime> textures> face room. If I also add the the texture
and morphs to the Library, Poser also generates an obj file, amongst others.
I've also found that if I delete the created figure from the Library, Poser
deletes the obj file but not the texture file, so it's possible to end up
with heaps of useless and unnecessary texture files. The only reason I
mention all this is that I don't like junk files taking up valuable hard
drive space.
Maybe you already know all this. :-)

Hi, Adriaan. As I mentioned in an earlier post, those are files that
Poser generates so you can compare a series of renders. The files will
eventually be deleted by Poser automatically. To change the maximum
number of cached renders, choose Edit > General Preference and on the
Document tab of the dialog change the value for "Max cached renders".

I'm sorry, Adriaan, I was mistaken. I got confused because the cache
files and the applied face textures are named similarly. I don't know
whether those textures are ever deleted unless you delete them yourself.
