Companies rarely live up to their slogans. The slogan writer most probably
uses a different provider!
Good luck Gail (you could make another of those wonderful fractals whilst

Don't be disheartened, Gail. Overall, we've been happy with Roadrunner. It
does tend to be unstable when the weather is bad or when there is
construction in the area but that's not their fault. Their technical
assistance has been super. Last time I called, I was on the phone for about
3 hours with 3 different techs before I finally got the problem solved.
That's both the good news and the bad news. It took a long time, but they
were willing to hang in there with me. Of course, the problem was a glitch
at their end. Somehow, my router got switched off. Wait a minute. This
doesn't sound like a recommendation for Roadrunner. But that could have
been lightning or something. Anyway, I have confidence in them and wouldn't
hesitate to recommend them. There are going to be occasional problems with
anything electronic.

I agree with you. I have dealt with the Time Warner call centers
in British Columbia and Kentucky. The techs are very friendly and
extremely knowledgeable.

Joëlle, Michelle, Jeanne, and Vern,
Thanks for the all the encouraging words :-) I'm thinking that yesterday's
problem was indeed just a fluke, especially since I've heard good things
about RoadRunner as well as the positive info from Jeanne and Vern. I don't
think their techs have actually taken over yet. The one clueless guy I spoke
with told me he was just filling in temporarily, and then when I called back
later on, I ended up with a very knowledgeable guy who had worked for
Adelphia. It was kind of funny because after they'd fixed the outage, I
could connect but after a while the speeds started to get slower and slower.
I'm used to getting more than 1500 Kbps on bandwidth tests (download), and
the most I could get was around 300 Kbps. So I called them again and the
tech said there were no known problems in my area at that time, so he had me
run a traceroute among other things and sure enough one of the routers in
Buffalo had a major problem. He actually thanked me for helping, sent the
info to where it had to go, and it was fixed within an hour. I told hubby
afterwards that I fixed the Internet. I figure if Al Gore can claim he
'invented' the Internet, I can claim that I fixed it ;-)

Frame it nicely and put it up on your wall. More seriously,
traceroute shows the hops from computer to computer required
for you to reach some place on the network starting from your
computer and also the time each of those hops takes. If one
of the hops takes much more than a quarter of a second (250
milliseconds) there may be something wrong with the computer
that is the target of that hop, especially if the delay is
consistently repeatable. Even if you don't care about timings
it can be interesting to discover just how many computers you
visit to get from here to there and who owns them. Corel's
WWW server (but not the FTP server) is actually content cached
by Akamai Technologies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akamai).

Yes, that is interesting. I knew there was hopping going on but not how
much or how to read the information. I can see how it could be helpful. I
think I'll just check in every now and again to see what's happening.
Thanks for the info.

I'm in an opposite situation. The other day (on the first day of a day & a
half cable/cablenet outage), it was announced that Time-Warner is pulling
out of the Houston market, turning all operations over to Comcast. I am not
happy about this.
As bad as RoadRunner can be (this week's outage, last month for 3 days),
I've heard much worse about Comcast. Not only service-wise but also
price-wise.
Even with the occasional mystery outages, I think you'll be happy with
RoadRunner. They really do have great customer service & tech people (after
10 minutes of auto-menus before you can choose to speak to a human). We've
dealt with people in Ontario (the majority of calls), Virginia, Kentucky &
once even Houston. They're always pleasant, not rushed & always issue
credits for the down time.
I hope I can find the same with Comcast. :-\
In any case, it should still be better than rabbit ears & dial-up!

Thanks for the feedback about RoadRunner, Pegs. I hope Comcast turns out to
be better than what you've heard. As you said, no matter what glitches we
might run into, it still beats dial-up. Or, as my kid informed me when I was
whining about possible outages in the future: "You can always read a book."
Yet another example of parent-child role reversal, an embarassingly frequent
occurrence around my house ;-)

Ok, I give up. My internet browser can get to corel.com, but tracert cannot.
It gave up after 30 instances of "request timed out". No wonder my

Type www.corel.com, not just corel.com. Make sure your firewall
allows tracert to both send and receive.
When I do a tracert to www.corel.com the last hop is to
64.86.136.16, which Whois indicates is Teleglobe Inc., Akamai
Technologies, Cambridge, MA.

Unfortunately, Time-Warner bought up all the "little" cable companies here
in Houston. There were 3 or 4 when I moved back here in 1990. If you live
just North of the City Limits (getting harder as everything gets annexed),
you can get Cox Communications as well as RoadRunner. Further North from
there, there are a couple of indies that I understand from customers work
just fine. Where I am, we have the choice of dial-up (nooooooooooooooooo!),
DSL (nooooo) or whatever cable we're presented with.
We've looked into DSL, although the speed isn't what we're used to. If we go
with the business class option, it's supposed to be faster than our current
service & still a bit less expensive. The real stopper though is THE
CONTRACT. :-O The thought of having to pay $250.00 if we aren't happy & want
to cancel service before our year is up, is definitely giving us pause. At
that price, it would make sense to just keep it. Time-Warner has no
contract - cancel anytine.
Yeah, it's pretty inconvenient when I have to look up a customer's extremely
old modem (or whatever) to find out what driver I need & I can't get online,
but the upside is that the house gets a little bit cleaner then. ;-)
Pegs. : )
