Thank Linda.
I've just seen this rose on my (now dead again) other computer and it looks
very different - much lighter.
I could see the blackspot I didn't remove, yikes, I couldn't see that on
this old monitor...

Joelle, you had previously mentioned (and others commented on)
that you could hear your computer running, etc. but the screen
went black. If you have had new fans and power supplies
installed and the screen is going black again but everything else
is running, then it's not an overheating problem and likely
either your graphics (video) card or your monitor (less likely).
Did the guy who's looking at your machine try another graphics
card? If the graphics is built into the motherboard, then he can
install a separate card and that will disable the motherboard
one, and you'll be able to see if the problem continues.

As for your monitors, you don't have to use the old monitor you
mention here on your old computer. Why not hook up the other
monitor to the old computer? Not only will it look better than
the old monitor, it will give you the opportunity to see if it
goes black.

Have you tried checking your computer temperature with software.
The previous two links I sent might seem a bit complicated. But
here's a link to another (CPUCool) which is shareware but you can
use for 30 days. This one you can just install and leave
everything set at default and it should detect the temperature
sensors on your system. (If you can determine your motherboard
model, then you can choose it from a dropdown list during
installation, but if not, just leave it set at default settings
and it will likely detect your setup):

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=214

When you run it, it takes a minute to read your temps, then
you'll see them in the upper left of the dialogue. Most newer
processors today will run without burning out anything at 80
degrees Celius, some even higher (but should not be run if they
are getting that hot!). If you get readings of between 25 to 55
degrees Celsius just before your system quits, then overheating
is not your problem.

I was thinking of something. Maybe it's the power saver feature and it's not
coming back up again? I remember Windows 98 had that problem of not wanting
to come out of stand-by.

Good thought. I have WinXP and had that problem also on XP when I
set the power saver feature. As a result, I haven't tried it since
but suppose it should.

I've been lucky with WinXP's power saver. I have a keyboard that I can just
press a key to go into standy, or wake up or power down. Also it will power
down drives or the monitor automatically if not used for a specific amount
of time. It always comes back up fine for me.

Another thing that can cause problems is screen savers. Some of them can get
cofused by the power saving settings.

Well, I don't use screensavers (except at Christmas when I like to
have a Christmas look all around the place, including my monitor),
so that's not the problem. And my keyboard also gives me those
options, but I haven't used them since my first problem with the
power save option. But when I get time I may give them a try.

Looks like there's plenty of room for good airflow inside the
box. And now, if everything stops and the computer shuts down it
obviously has a major problem. Sending it back and, in fact,
getting an exchange for another one, would be my next step. When
something that is new starts acting up soon after purchase I tend
to be concerned that little glitches will continiue to be a
problem.

Good luck - and glad you've got the old monitor looking better!

Yep, 85 degrees is definitely waaay too high for any sensor
reading, so overheating would appear to be the problem overall.
Print out that screenshot and give it to the computer people
along with the computer. Good luck!
