I don't know if this "dark groping about 'cos I can't see anything"
lighting is something you are specially trying to achieve. If it is,
then please ignore my comment. If you are trying to avoid it I can't
advise you how to do it in the renderer. However, when you look at
the image in PSP the histogram is just like that of an under-exposed
scene, all bunched to the left. You can fix this and create the
impression of proper exposure by setting the High Clip Limit to 179
in Histogram Adjustment. Since the light is coming from the top the
side of the deer facing the viewer remains somewhat dark after this.
That can be fixed by applying Fill Flash at the default setting of
40 (PSP 9). You get the attached. It looks like daylight but maybe
you don't want that.

Thanks Spandex I like yours better; I've printed out your reply and will use
it in future. The Histogram is a weakness of mine I know virtually nothing
about it.

As a first pass you can eliminate the need to understand anything
by using one of several approaches. Here are two:
1. Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Histogram Stretch. This does
something a lot like what I described about using the High Clip
Limit. You'd still have to add the Fill Flash step
2. Automatic Contrast Enhancement (hidden in Customize under Unused
Commands). You won't need the Fill Flash here. Just choose the
Mild setting if the effect seems too strong.
You could also try Smart Fix in PSP X but it may well make the image
too bright and then you'll be stuck fiddling with incomprehensible
controls.
