I use both Daz Studio and Poser 6.

Studio is free for registering at this location:
http://www.daz3d.com/program/studio/1_0index.php

You can also download a starter set of models and scenery there.

Once you get deep into 3D rendering, you'll want Poser, but you can
certainly learn as well as produce great renderings from Daz Studio.

And of course, you've got to have a 2d image editing program such as
PSP in order to create the patterns/textures/colors for use in the 3D
program, as well as post-rendering touch-up.

Another program I often use for landscape is TerraGen, available free
at:
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/

(v0.9.43 that is. Version 2 is still being developed and will likely
be a professional program for movie producers, etc.)

There are many models available for sale and free on the web. Daz, 3D
Cafe, Rendervisions, etc.
