For licorice, we bought Sen-Sen, those little teeny Pez-like candy in a
box. Licorice has always been a favorite of mine. I even have a bottle
of Black Sambuca for a quick fix. :-)
I remember those peanut shaped candies and the spearmint leaves. How
about the colored candy drops that came on what looked like a piece of
calculator paper?

( now that I think of it, they were small, square, flattish candies
about a 1/4" square)

I didn't have Sen-Sen until more like the teenage years. They were very
popular with teens. The dots on paper were ok but not my favorite. Some of
the old-fashioned candy was the best.

At Easter someone buried a chocolate bunny for us rutabagas. We had
to make it last all year. Rutabagas had none of the fripperies you all
enjoyed. I can't believe the various memories I triggered with a simple
question about a South African ditty :)

Candy Dots.

I liked Squirrel Chews, Bit O Honey and Mary Janes. And the coconut
watermelon slices, but not the big hard gummy ones, the nice soft ones with
the sugar coating.

My dad used to take us to the shop with a nickle or a dime apiece, we'd have
a tiny little paper sack and got to pick out our Penny Candy (all 6 of us.)
When my own kids were little, there was a dusty little lost-in-time shop out
in the middle of nowhere here called the Way-Way Store (meaning it was Way
Way away from civilization, I guess!) and they had all the old penny candy
types, except they were now all 10-25 cents. But the kids got to stand on a
stepstool and peer into glass cases, point out what they wanted and get it
in the same old kind of paper sack.

The two old spinster sisters who owned it passed away a couple years ago.
Sadness.

It's the candy.

You got a chocolate bunny? Hmmmmmmmmmm... we got Peeps. I'm a major Peep
fanatic. I don't really like the taste of them, I just like to bite off all
their heads and put them back in the box.

I taught my own kids to do it. Horrible, I know. It's a race to see who
can decapitate the Peeps first around here.

(My oldest daughter takes this to extremes. She bites all the heads of an
entire package of Keebler Elfwiches before her boyfriend can get to the
package. She's done this to every boyfriend since high school. I think it's
some kind of "don't mess me buddy" subliminal message. I think it works,
too. You should see the look on that boy's face when he takes the package
of cookies out of the cupboard.)

Er "Peeps" ???

I'm used to that as an abbreviation for "people", so your paragraph above
had me doing a double-take! "... I just like to bite of all their
heads..."

Forget all the rest, the only one that matter is the Easter chick,
preferably yellow.
