Author Is this the home for Photo-Art?

I have never looked in this NG before, but have recently acquired a
large interest in Photo-Art---primarily the kind where you "clone" a
source and adjust/add/create with brushes/strokes, etc. I got into some
programs like Deep Paint, ArtRage, Gertrudis, even a DogWaffle engine
(what a name). Painter and Painter Essentials are there also. There
are a number of sites specifically devoted to or having separate forums
for Photo-Art.

Curiously, I never tried PSP for this approach but today stumbled onto
the Art Media tools, and the "Trace" function. Really crude but I have
done a few interesting experiments.

I am a little bummed that the Brush Variations pallet and the Brush tips
feature is off limits to the Art Media tools. Why the heck is that?

I have since been thirsting for PSP related PhotoArt stuff, and looked
in to this NG just now. Anyway, is this the place to talk Photo Art and
painterly works with PSP? Are there any here who dabble in this aspect
of PhotoArt? I have scrolled up the subject lines and looked here and
there, but haven't seen the "hand-painted" work I am talking about. Are
there any here doing "smudge painting" with PSP?

Any comments or suggestions to point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Ken

There's a little cross over, but generally, the photographs are just
tweaked for realism and posted in the photography group, while in
graphics, you submit the fully created images and wildly modified
photos. I've always considered it to be a realism sort of thing.
Photos are the record keeping while graphics are a person's
interpreted expression.

Lots more photos than artwork, but on the other hand, artwork takes a
lot more time in general than processing a photo.

Another problem has been the limited art ability of PSP. I believe
you found that you cannot change the brushes in any of the artistic
modes. Painter has always aimed at an imitation of real art tools,
but we just have a very limited set in PSP. (not even an Auto Clone!)

Ken,

Not sure quite what you mean by "smudge painting", but I do this kind of
stuff in PSP (never touched the art media tools myself)

.....and many others in this news group do what you describe as Photo
Art...including the "Valentine Massacre 2006" thread...if you can call it
art...... lol

Andy, thanks for the comments and the link---warp tool picture
formation, wow, now that's another extended and unexpected trick.

The smudge painting I was referring to is similar in concept and uses
the smudge brush similarly to what you were doing with the warp brush.
Many who write about do other layer and blend mode manipulations in
addition to the smudge tool/brush effects.

This is a tut on it although there are many, esp on Innographx.com.
Here is another link to Smudge Painting basics:

Say, where are the valentine day massacre images posted? I looked thru
all the message header just above and saw one maybe two. Where are they?

Thanks again,

Ken

Ken, if you re-download the Graphics messages from about the end of January,
you'll get the Valentine images.

You've found the right place ;-) As Ron said, there is some cross over with
the photography group. There aren't any specific rules that I know of, so
it's pretty much left up to the individual poster. I post manipulated photos
in either group, depending on what I want to emphasize in an individual
image eg. its identity as a photo or its identity as some other variety of
digital work.

In your comment to AB, you asked about posting tips/techinques along with
the pics. Again, there are no rules, but a few words of explanation are
always appreciated, even if it's just to mention starting points. I'm very
rarely able to give detailed descriptions because of the trial-and-error
nature of the way I work - actually, the way I 'play' is more like it ;-)
