GRANDMA MOSES MEMORIAL CHALLENGE
|
|

Four photos will be added to this thread as starter components
in the challenge. Generate your own takes on and tributes to the
Grandma, by utilizing and combining any portions of the starters
provided. Additional outside elements can also be added as you
combine, overhaul, repaint, fudge, fake, tweak, and do all those
whatevers.
There are no picky rules. Demerits listed below are not rules
only consequences, and let's forget about prizes too. The
Grandma Moses Memorial is about presenting your visions, your
love of colors, your feel for textures. Well, mostly its about
exhibiting your own inventive abilities to harness photographic
data for use in other more nefarious (or even higher) purpose.
Its about our eternal search for better ways to grab onto a
viewer's senses and sensibilities, and impact them. It is not
about replicating the work of an old broad who clearly had those
talents. Who, though long gone, is never forgotten. This
challenge is about honoring the Grandma and remembering her
legacy, not copying any precise style.
The best challenges are hard work as they force us to stretch
old limits. Whether we want to or not. It's an opportunity to
hone more skills, and better exercise creative muscles. Possibly
even teach ourselves a few new things along the way. Kinda like
throwing a big party makes one get up off a backside and clean
the house.
Real challenges are about stepping up to some plate, and simply
calling our own selves out. Not to show the world, but to better
discover just what lurks down inside the shadows of our very own
wells.
Bonus points for any work that pops up off the
canvas to tickle eyeballs and lift spirits.
Bonus points for humor.
Bonus points for butt kicking sky treatments.
Demerits for whining or excuses.
Demerits for asking too many questions.
Demerits for submitting additional entries are too much alike.
Another of the same darned thing yet again revisited in a
slightly different shade, is only okay for underpanties and
jelly beans. Not here. If upping additional entries, they should
be completely and vastly different from any earlier submit.
Demerits for using page curl. As a dork who once constructed a
tarmac (with jets no less) solely out of a fern photo and wad of
KPT3 page curling treatments, trust that this snout can smell
page curl.
Any hint of Buttonize shall immediately necessitate a hit
contract being placed upon your head, so you may want to tread
lightly there too.
C'mon, wow us. Better yet, wow yourself. Why not go mining for
some of that there right stuff you may not even know you've got.
Challenge ends Sunday night.

Number 4 has never shown up here, and I'll just assume bizarro
since it clearly got sent.

The four photos show up for me, but they are of a landscape. But I
am at a loss for what or who this Grandma Moses is, let alone her
Memorial?
If you are going to be our Camp Challenge Counselor until Sunday,
why not stretch your own limits a bit too, and make your initiative
more accessible for regulars and artists from all corners of the
earth? :-)

Grandma Moses was a famous painter:
http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/moses_grandma.html
She did a folk type of painting and is referred to as "Grandma" because
she didn't really start painting until she was 78 years old. Strangely
enough, and I have no idea how they got it, but our local Fine Arts
Center has an original Grandma Moses on display.

Grandma Moses used to be known more for the preserves she sold
than for her paintings. However, she started painting late in
life and got a reputation for her naive representations of scenes
from the village in which she lived in New York state. Her images
are part of the American heritage of folk art. Some examples of
her work include:
http://tinyurl.com/492wl
http://tinyurl.com/4js8c
http://tinyurl.com/7y35n
http://tinyurl.com/545vq
http://tinyurl.com/4q7t5
http://tinyurl.com/4odn7
http://tinyurl.com/4wcwn
http://tinyurl.com/3jqg7
The paintings sell in the range of $20,000 to $100,000 by the way.

It's easy to Google for the term "Grandma Moses". Here's a little
blurb from the Smithsonian: http://tinyurl.com/53vez. Not all
interesting painters are European men, and some European male
painters are thoroughly uninteresting - take Sir Joshua Reynolds,
for example, please :)

Hope, this is not a demerit question, but the time frame is too short,
Porter, especially with it being Easter weekend. Any chance of extending
it?

Of course it's a demerits question, but an okay one too. :)
Grandma Moses challenge now extended an additional week. Ending
April 3rd (around midnight Pacific Standard time)
May your kids find all their Easter eggs, and may the digital

She was from the boonies of upstate NY (like moi) and I remember
hearing about her ever since I was a kid. Nowadays, my mother
uses her as an example for me all the time: "If Grandma Moses
could start making something of herself in her 70's, there might
still be some hope left for you. " ;-)

We have to remember that the group is cross-cultural, though
the emphasis is on the U.S. That sometimes leads to confusion.
I didn't know who Grandma Moses was when I first came to this
country either. After living here for a while she's penetrated
my consciousness :)

I can't believe I wrote that. Let me put it into English that
actually says what I meant: Now I've lived here for a while,
she's penetrated my consciousness. (We all know Grandma Moses
lived here for a while :)

Well let's be fair, we western Europeans have it much easier due to
the longer history. Name Rembrandt, Vermeer, Kandinski, Picasso,
Renoir... and most on your side of the ocean will know them.

I wasn't too bright yesterday, obviously... I was looking for clues
in Porter's photos, wondering if I failed to see a memorial or a
grave in them :-) A bit like England really, where quite a few hills
aren't what they seem to be.

Nice construction, I make them a lot in English when I'm not
careful.
At school, I once did a speech on Han Vermeegeren, the Vermeer
forger. He went to jail for his forgeries, and while there only had
toilet paper to sketch on. My sentence however ran something like
'... in jail, where he made a drawing of Jesus sitting on toilet
paper'.

Interesting selections.
Probably one of the things about Grandma Moses is that she is a cultural icon to us US citizens. She went against the
odds and against convention, and succeeded in touching a half remembered view of our past. As said before 'a simpler
time'.

Here's a little about her:
http://www.smithsonianmag.si.edu/sm...pr01/moses.html
She did what you might call 'detailed primitive paintings'. She had
no idea of perspective or any of the usual painter's discipline, but
she used the details to get her image across. Most of her subject
theme was of her country life.

Thanks Ron. I'd visited the Smithsonian site after Kris posted the
link as a tinyurl. Very kind of you all to offer information.
At a guess, this painter would describe 'the way things were' for
many Dutch, I think:

For me, even way down here, especially the cards. As a kid I saw as
much of him as I did Norman Rockwell :) Though Normans paintings showed
life as I *know* it, Peck showed what I wished I'd been around for :)

Barbara and McGrandpa, as Pieck is known to you, Grandma Moses
should be known to us... I still don't know why she wasn't to me.
Barbara, those prints will be worth something now. Mc.Grandpa, I'll
confess to preferring Norman Rockwell although Pieck did some good
paintings and etchings :-)

I think what I've always liked about Rockwell is that his paintings told a
story. He did covers for the Saturday Evening Post magazine for years, and
they always reminded me of something I had seen.

This is a great challenge... I am a bit pressed with time and probably can't
play but I enjoy all the contributions hugely.
