Haven't you ever wondered about the earth being dark and those skies
broad daylight? No matter how I look at those works, I can't get
excited over the concept. But I may very well be missing something,
goes without saying.
Are you somewhere in the west of England? It looks like a nice
village, like the many pretty ones I visited in the west.

How clever of you Trev, I didn't even think of scrolling down
beneath the image.
I gather now that an artist Martin Ongar made the image? In any
case, an atrractive village indeed.

Hi Simon,
It was the 'bbuoy' in the image title that got me confused!
There are some interesting images on the Wivenhoe link. If I had looked
before, I would have seen that you aren't in Wales!
I hope you will post some more of your art work.
:-)

Doesn't Magritte go for inconsistencies? Trying to turn our minds upside
down? It's to make us re-think what we're seeing.

Oh no! The site is a gentle spoof on the village and its inhabitants and
all the 'artists' are made up (none of them are parodies of particular
local artists either, that wouldn't be nice). The pictures are all mine
and involved PSP in one way or another (the 'artist's' surnames are all
taken from disused London Underground stations).
Wivenhoe is in some ways like the St. Ives of the East, quite eccentric
and with a lot of (often heavy drinking) creative people.
I know what you mean about the earth looking dark and the sky bright..
I've discussed this myself with people who say 'well I've seen a real
evening like that', and sometimes I think that myself. But when I look
again at a good reproduction, it looks *just outside* of reality to me.
Well, but the mind plays tricks and is very open to suggestion.
Apparently Magritte did over thirty versions and they're all over the
web, but usually rather small.

I know, but it's just not happening in my brain. No click, no
wonder, no Aha Erlebnis :-) That's why I asked: nobody's ever been
able to open my eyes to what does make them 'blink'.

Oh boy, am I dim (or Dutch) or what? Well done, I took everything
seriously including the witches part :-)

Better that than an invasion of blossom sprinkling, tarot card
shuffling, aura sniffing folks, would you agree? Last I heard (long
time ago I was there) that is what happened to Glastonbury.

Something like it could happen with a thunderstorm approaching from
one side and bright sunlight from the other.
My mind is very open to suggestion too (Mr. Spock really exists),
but just not with Margritte's :-)

I love Magritte... but, then, I'm attracted to the offbeat, the
tongue-in-cheek,
the "WTF" and the "Don't take yourself so seriously, dude!" in most of life.
I like things that are more than they appear on first inspection....and
people who are like that, too.
Welcome, Simon!

They look like many an image taken with my digital camera, which can
only capture a very limited dynamic range. Expose for the sky, and the
earth is too dark.

Oh it's not so bad. Maybe it's not a Magritte camera after all :-)

Actually, Magritte's is not so bad, either - it's possible to dig out
some shadow detail if you try...

But your image looks real :-) A situation that we might actually
see, from camera or outside. Never mind me, it's just me and
Magritte's way of very obvious going for the 'unusual'.

Yes indeed. And I was wrong about it not being a Magritte camera :-)
