PSP 9 will not install

I just cleaned off my hard drive and installed Windows XP upgrade over
Windows 98SE. When I tried to install PSP 9 I received a message that said:
Error 1311. Source file not found. C:/Documents and Settings/ M. Dean
Reed/Local Settings/temp/temp directory1 for PSP9
retail.zip/psp9retail/Data1.cab.Verify that the file exists, and that you
can access it.
When I looked the files did not exist. Is there a way to get around this
error message?
Thanks,
Dean

Take a look at the thread "10.10 Update not working!!" starting on
June 20 in the Paint Shop Pro X group. That solution might work for
you.

Thanks Fred, but she had the Data 1 cab file to stick in PSP X from another
program. I don't have one.
Tim, I tried what you suggested and also what Microsoft had in their
knowledge base, but that didn't work either...It says to contact Corel, if
those two didn't help, so I guess I will try that...If you have any other
suggestions, I will be glad to try them...Thanks for your help guys.

I think it would be a good idea to clean out the Windows temporary
files - Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk
Cleanup, with all the options except "Compress Old Files" selected.
It would've probably been best not to install XP over the top of 98SE.
Even though it is an upgrade copy of XP you don't need to install 98SE
first. Just install from the XP disc and at some point it will ask you
to put the 98 disc in the drive to prove that you have it.

Thanks Tim, I didn't know that I could install do that...I don't have much
on the computer so I may do it over again and not install 98SE, but first
I'll try your suggestion of cleaning out the Windows temporary files.. Will
let you know how I make out...

Nope Tim, that didn't work either....I think I'll clean the hard drive and
start over again..only this time I won't install over Win98SE. I tried to
e-mail Corel, but they wanted a serial number from my PSP Program, and I
don't have one......will let you know how I make out..

I'm not clear on whether you are installing from a CD, but I think
you are. My PSP 9 CD contains Data1.cab. You might try copying the
whole CD to your hard drive and running setup.exe from there. That
should accomplish what I referred to. The MS Installer is not very
tolerant of intermittent CD reading.
If you talk to a Corel support person again, you need to patiently
explain that PSP 9 did not come with serial numbers. Your
registration recorded in the Jasc database that they purchased is
what qualifies you for PSP 9 support. Good luck, and please let us
know how you fare.

Yes, I am installing from a CD. I tried copying it to the hard drive and
installing from there and also from the desktop, but neither worked for
me...My CD does have the Data1.cab file on it, but it can't seem to find it
it when I try to install. I've even cleaned the CD thinking that it might be
dirty...Right now I'm trying to install in on Windows 98, to see if that
will work and then put Windows XP over top..
My copy of PSP9 was given to me from someone else, so it is not
registered...if all else fails I'll go buy another one f rom e-bay...Do you
know anything about any problems people are having with PSPX or XI? Maybe
it is time to upgrade to a newer version...

I GOT IT!! Finally when I tried to install on Windows 98, it installed
okay..(not sure why). Will now try and install WinXP upgrade over top of
Win98, instead of over Win98SE, like Tim suggested. I think I should be okay
now...Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Oh, yes! PSP 10 has, with its patches, corrected the most egregious
coding fl*ws, but of course none of the design err*rs except those
in the browser, which has returned closer to the one in PSP 9.
Closer, but still inferior in most peoples' opinions that I read.
PSP 11, on the other hand, is still replete with both kinds of
problems. Many people are using it successfully, though.
Before buying either, an hour or two spent browsing the two
products' newsgroups will give you a good idea of the utility of
their few new features and of the problems people are having. Only
you can decide if the former are "must have" features or the latter
are deal killers.

I've had PSP 9 for two years and I'm just now beginning to feel more
comfortable with it...I don't really feel like learning a new version, but I
suppose it will come eventually...

There is plenty to contemplate as far as upgrading to a new version. A
version that does what you want and that you're comfortable using is
going to be the best version. Luckily PSP comes with a trial version, so
you use it for 30 days to see whether it suits you and has any new
features that make your life easier. There are other factors to consider
too. Your operating system for instance. Anything later than PSP 9 won't
work with Windows 98SE or ME. The latest vesions have patches for
working with Vista. Nine and earlier don't. (I've heard that PSP 9 seems
to work OK though, but PSP 7 and earlier needs a bit of fiddling to get
Help working).
