I have Ver. 9.00 of Paint Shop Pro 9 and am quite new at it. When I use the erase tool and do a Ctrl right click on a
blank area of, say, white instead of a white erase I get a checkerboard pattern of white and gray. What am I doing
wrong?

the checker board showes that you have Transparency. If printed tit will
not show. Its even possible to customize the size of the checks and/or there
colour.
But Ctrl + Right click should select the colour under the cursor to be the
Background colour in the materials Pallet

How can something be blank (i.e. contain nothing) and be white
at the same time? I'm confused by what you mean.

What do you mean by "white erase"? If you want to get rid of
something by painting over it with white use the Paintbrush
with a white color to paint over the item with white. Meanwhile,
an Eraser erases content from your image leaving a hole. On a
regular layer the hole is transparent showing whatever might
be underneath. In a background layer, which is a special one
that cannot have transparency (and if it exists must be at
the bottom of the layer stack), the hole is filled with the
currently set background color.

With a brush Ctrl-clicking samples the color under the brush.
Left click with Ctrl puts the color in the foreground swatch
and right click with Ctrl puts the color in the background
swatch. The Eraser does this too and it doesn't erase when
it does it. Therefore, are you really talking about the Eraser
tool, or are you perhaps talking about the Background Eraser
or some other tool? If you are talking about the Eraser, are
you sure you have accurately described all of what you are
doing? In any case, why don't you tell us what you hope to
accomplish with the Ctrl key? Then we can tell you what to
do. The checkerboard pattern of white and grey is the default
background for showing where the image is transparent. It
isn't part of your image, just something contrasting so you
can see the erased holes in your image. You can change the
appearance of this checkerboard in File > Preferences >
General Preferences on the Transparency and Shading tab if
you feel like it.

This would be easier to answer if you explained what you were
trying to accomplish. The best way of doing it may or may not
involve the Eraser.
