I am not sure if I can ask a question regarding exif data here or whether I
should ask in the photography group. If this isn't the right place please
accept my apology and tell me :)
I have a Nikon 8700 coolpix digi cam and post edit photos in PSP 9.
Sometimes I upload photos to DeviantArt and noticed that the exif data don't
show up there but on other peoples pages I see that theirs are included in
the information about the photo and it gets there automatically. In PSP I
see that the exif date are available for photos I haven't touched but are
lost once saved after I croped, resized or did another edit. Can exif data
loss on edited photos be avoided or is that not possible. I don't think
that other people upload unedited photos so suspect this is something to do
with PSP in generall or with my settings.
I would very much appreciate if you could give me some information about
this :)
Thank you very much and happy easter!

This is the right place. The Photography group has become a photo
gallery, which is fine, but questions get buried there.
Saving of EXIF information depends on the file format you choose.
Many formats do not support it. Since you have not said, I'll offer
the general advice to stay with uncompressed TIFF, PspImage, and
JPEG for keeping EXIF info.
Try editing an image, saving it as PspImage, and re-opening it. If
the EXIF data disappear, update your PSP 9 to the current version
9.0.1.1. Jasc was never consistent in naming its updates during the
rush to get the company sold. The definitive answer is found in
Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. You should have an entry
named "Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9.01 - (9.0.1.1)." If not, get the update
with Help > Check for Updates or "by hand" downloading from Corel's
web site.
If you are saving in JPG format, use File > Export > JPEG Optimizer
and make sure the "Save EXIF data" box is checked.
Please write back if these do not cure the problem for you.

Using the PSP JPEG Optimizer keeps my EXIF data. I used Unlead Smart Saver
after editing in PSP for saving the photos sofar and this broke the EXIF
information. Thanks to your information I found this out. Thank you so much
for your help. I very much appreciate it.
I wish you a nice holiday.

Fred, I find myself in a very awkward position here. I have a great
deal of respect for you and what you do here in these newsgroups.
I can't think of anyone who has consistently helped people as much or
as well as you have since I first found the J*A*S*C newsgroups several
years ago.
But I do take exception to your comment above. Yes, the Photography ng
has become more gallery than discussion group. Heck, I'm a major
contributor to that on a pretty regular basis. But I have never seen
a single question go unanswered. Nor are the responses inadequate or
substandard.
When these newsgroups were first set up/defined back when C took over
from J, a request for a gallery type group was made so we could
segregate the discussion from the show&tell. Never happened. [shrug]
But anyone and everyone is welcomed in the Photography ng to ask
questions or start discussions on techniques in PSP or how to's or
whatever stirs their juices. Even post their photos. <smile>
Please don't take this as an attack. I just felt there was a need to
clarify things a bit.
Regards,
Gene

No offense taken, Gene. I have missed a few by scanning headers
rapidly, and generalized to other commentators too readily. Having
lots of eyes reading the group certainly helps.
When the volume got really high, I stopped reading it entirely on
busy days. I wonder if anyone else has?

Thanks Fred. I admit the volume can be a bit high some days. But no
where near the traffic in PSPX <Big Grin>
Then again, I think people tend to follow where their interests lie. I
check Graphics, Scripts, PSP9 and even PSPX on a semi-regular basis.
But my use of PSP is for photos, so that's where I live.
Again, thanks for being so patient and helpful!

Gene

For myself I make my own 'distinction'. If its an overall operational
question about the software I'll ask here. If its a specific photo edit
question I'll ask with that topic in the subject heading. There have
been extensive follow-up responses to those photo edit queries. Not that
many photo edit questions are asked but when it does occur there are
many good replies. I post photos with a short summary of tools used and
there is always the possiblity that someone will add a comment that
pushes me to investigate and try another routine.
This section, imo, is for more generalized, or overall aspects and as it
turns out those who participate here have more awareness of the
workings. I get good answers where ever I ask <grin>
