I have just re-installed Windows XP Pro, which I do once a year.
As News Groups are a new thing in my life I haven't found out how to delete
the thousands of old messages in one swoop.
Outlook Express downloads 300 headers in one go, which I then highlight and
delete. But there must be a faster way. I still have another 7000+ to delete
in Photography alone.
Yikes that will take forever!!!
I would just like to start again with the current messages.
HELP!!
Any assistance will be very gratefully received!

Sorry it's still pretty early here and I misread the question.
Right click the group, and choose CATCH UP instead.

Porter, I may also have misread Joelle's OP. I thought she
was talking about how to load the entire 7,000 photography
group headers in at once. Either way will work, won't it?

Thanks Porter :-)
I wish I could download more than a 1000 headers at a time though.
It looks like I shall be doing this for a few hours!

Maybe someone could tell me how to do that with Thunderbird? When I=20
right click I don't have any such dialog box.

Just do Catch Up,
you don't have to download anything.
Catch up, "catches you up". Get it? Catch up. :)

Aha, thanks I hadn't experimented with that one yet.

Good Morning Jerry,
There is nothing to roll back to, the thoroughly cleaned PC is just being
filled up again.
Doing the annual wash isn't the problem, but re-joining and thus downloading
the News Groups, was a bit of a shock when I saw how many messages there
were.
Thanks for the pointer, I'd overlooked that bit and had set it from 300 to
the max 1000. My brain is still in need of soothing voices and soft music!!
I had used a backup copy of XP (which I always do anyway), and the $%%£"
thing was corrupt. When I'd re-formatted yet again and used the original all
was well.
I am a compulsive loader of programs, so an annual clear out is a 'good
thing'!
Thanks again, you can have your coffee now..
:-))

Joelle, it's your PC and your time, so I won't evangelize
here. Except to say, I'm a firm believer in not fixing
things that aren't broken. So, I make periodic manual System
Restore Points, and definitely do it everytime I add or
uninstall something. I spent a couple hours yesterday trying
to figure out why the spell check in OE suddenly started
erroring out, when it's been fine for a long time. Turned
out that I'd un-installed MS Picture It! (the ! is part of
its name, like ThumbS!), which somehow trashed OE! A quick
system restore and I was back up and running - it was the
diagnosis time that was obnoxious.

Just turn off the "max" setting per the screen shot I sent
you. That, combined with Catch-up, will do what you want, I
think.

See above about fixing things that aren't broke. As to your
corrupt CD of XP, why not get a /free/ replacement from M$?
All you have to do is show them you have a license, which
you need anyway to do a new install.
I used to be where you are now, perhaps. Always adding new
apps, new hardware drivers, uninstalling the old crap, etc.
Then, one day about 8-10 years ago, it suddenly occurred to
me that I was no longer a computer hobbyist that ate
frustration like candy. I discovered - during one of my PC
"oil changes"! - that I was using the "means" (i.e., playing
on the PC) and forgot about the "end", which is doing
useful work or useful fun - ala PSP and my love of car pics.
I have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, conversing with you
on-line. Hope you'll have a good day! Tomorrow, God willing
and the crick don't rise, I'll have a rare opportunity at
the Walter P. Chrysler Museum, where I volunteer
occasionally. 200+ members of the National Chrysler 300 Car
Club are coming to visit, with 40-50 Letter Series 300 cars!
So, I'll have a major hoot talking to these men and women
about my fav Chrysler cars, /and/ get some candid shots of
the cars! Life doesn't get any better than that!.
So, please excuse my rant if I'm trampling on your rights.
Being that you're covered by the Magna Charta same as me,
plus your version of theFirst Amendment, I guess we both
have the "right" to do as we please!
-- Jerry
P.S. I first heard about computer "oil changes" 20 years ago
from an IT guru. He was actually talking about re-booting
which fixes a lot of things. But, there's times, like when
my daughter's PC got infested with over 120 viruses, bots,
and trojans before a "time bomb" blew up, and took out the
anti-virus software, and killed her system. She had no CD-Rs
for her data and it was a total loss - re-FDISK, re-format,
re-install Windows.

Thanks Jerry and everyone else,
I have implemented all the necessaries and the NGs are clean again.
I thought that if I turned off the 'Get Headers' bit, I wouldn't get any
Headers, this was obviously wrong.
With nice people like you and the others around it has been solved.
My PC is somewhat ancient, only 800MhZ (AMD Thunderbird), with 384 MB of
SDRAM, so I thought that cleaning it up might make it run better. (Finding
more RAM for it has proved harder than I thought).
Anyway, it's my housewifely attitude, if you clean + tidy it, it will work
better!
'My' IT guru has suggested that I build my own system, easy for him to say,
he does nothing else all day long. But he will help, so I might just go down
that route, unless I find a good priced system first!
My goodness, your poor daughter, or was it you who had to deal with it, so
many nasties are pretty terminal.
Thanks again.

Egad! You're worse than me! <grin> Mine is a 1.6ghz AMD,
which runs at the same CPU speed as an Intel clocked at
2.2ghz. But, I've only got 512MB RAM and I'm dying! I worked
over 3 hours (!) 2 days ago just doing a 4-part car photo
stitch that wound up around 6500 x 4000 pixels. My PC would
just "go away and hide" whenever PSP 9 decided to save an
Undo file. And, no I couldn't/wouldn't turn Undo off!
I want my PC-guru nephew to build me a near state-of-the art
machine later this summer with around a 3-4ghz processor and
at least 2 gig, preferably 4 gig of memory. I haven't
upgraded my hardware to all-new in around 5 years, so I'm
overdue for the kind of work I do today.

I doubt I would ever buy a Dell, Gateway, Compaq, whatever,
because I don't want proprietary hardware and O/S. When my
nephew gives up the ghost I'll go to one of the many places
in my area that will custom-build a system to my specs.

Hi Joelle,
I found a site called crucial.com that has a suitability checker and lots of
different sorts of sdram available for uk customers. You can find it on e
bay at cheaper prices but it's more difficult to find out whether it really
is suitable for your machine.

My email is still playing up, must be because I added an umlaut (ë) to the e
on my name. Have taken it off again..
It still 'all systems go' here. Poor hubby looks undernourished today!
Thanks Jerry.

Thanks for that Jewels,
