Automated calenders...are they scripts or just graphic elements?

Hi All! Wow, I can't believe I just found this site, it's awesome!

Anyhoo, I've notices that some blogs have single day calendars, but I'm not sure if they are automated scripts or just a graphic element that has to be updated per post. Can anyone tell me how to re-create this element, point me in the right direction of how to incorporate a calendar on my website.

p.s. - if they are just graphic elements no need to tell me how...I can re-create a grapic easily, but if this is a script of some kind...what and where can I find it?
