| Youtube's listings of videos provide sample snapshots of each video;
that is snapshots are the middle portions of the videos. Do most
people feel that middle samples of videos are usually representative
of a video's content?

No, not really. What I'd like is to be able to use a flash slider to
select which frame is thumbnailed.
Still, there are worse things about Youtube's design than the position of
it's thumbnails!

Not usually. It's only really useful when the video consists of a
continuous shot of a single scene/object/person.
