Hide horizontal scroll bar on resolution above 800 wide

I have designed a web page, and I want to hide the horizontal scroll bar when it is displayed on screen resolutions higher than 800 pixels wide.

I have tried to use javascript to detect the screen resolution and use the javascript to insert "body {overflow-x: hide}" into the page. I can not make this javascript work, but by putting the "body {overflow-x: hide}" directly into the page code it hides the horizontal scroll bar, but it does it on all resolutions.

Can anyone point me to some code that will accomplish what I want to do?
