| What kind of software would I use to create a Flickr-type website, where
people could post photos and have other people critique them? (albeit for a
smaller, more targeted audience than flickr)
Does software like that exist, or is it all custom built?

have a look around hotscripts.com. You most defiantly need some kind of
server-side language such as PHP or Perl. There are literally THOUSANDS
of gallery scripts in the PHP section. Generally you will need to make
modifications to the PHP code to get just what you want but I learned
enough PHP to change one completely in a few days and now I'm even
building my own, albeit very slowly ;)
