Try out a few free hosting services such as Geocities.com or Freewebs.co
m. They put ads on your site to pay for it but you can often get past
them by strategically placing a comment start '<--' in the right place
;). They also don't allow you cgi/php support usually. Your ISP often
gives you free webhosting - ask them if they don't advertise it on their
site.
Free sites generally have a 'browser upload'. You login, go to your
upload page, enter the file location in the box and it uploads it for
you. Paid hosting gives you access to a FTP account - you need an FTP
client to use it.
I hope this helps.

Um, that would be in violation of the terms of service, which would be
grounds to have your account terminated without warning.

Yeah but they make thousands on ad profits anyway - I did it for the
past four years and I hadn't had a single warning ;)

yeah, and if everyone did this geocities would have no reason to host
free web space and everyone loses out - the "tragedy of the commons"
online (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons)

live with the ads or pay for your own space, don't ruin it for everyone
else.
