Have I infected my computer?

I just tried to view a .mov file with the MS media viewer. The
application gave me a dialog box which said that it didn't really have
the proper decoder, and that anyway, one needed to make sure that the
files was from a trustworthy source. But it played anyway.

Is the MS media viewer so fantastic that it runs executables automatically?
Or are there other ways that a video file can infect a computer?

TIA

Are you infected? A mov is not an executable.

A mov is not an executable, nor is a jpg. Nor an html, for that matter.
But executables can be invoked from html, and apparently also from jpg.
In any case, there's some security consideration for jpg's. So, perhaps
for mov files as well.

Do you have some more information on how to start an executable
from a jpg picture?

No, I can't. Do you happen to know why Thunderbird has a checkbox under
the "Privacy" configuration window for "Block loading of remote images in
mail messages"?
