Installation problems with Paint Shop Pro X

| Howdy,
I downloaded the trial version of Paint Shop Pro X and was unable to install
on my favorite computer, which is an XP Pro machine with lots of disk space
and 1G of memory. As a test, I tried installing it on my wife's computer,
which is another XP Pro machine, and I liked the program. I then purchased
the full version, thinking it would install easily on my machine; however,
it will not run. I get a message stating "This copy of Paint Shop Pro has
been damaged or illegally modified. Please reinstall from your original
source." Removing the installed program and reinstalling did not help.
Deactivating the virus checker, the firewall, the Internet connection, and
using Safe mode did not help. There is one user on my machine, and he has
full control (as administrator). I never experienced any problems
installing software before on this machine.
Many calls to customer support at Corel have resulted in nothing helpful.
The fellow I spoke with said the problem was either with corrupted dlls or
registry entries, but he didn't know which ones were involved. He gave me a
utility which was supposed to remove all gremlins, but it did not help. He
ended by saying he would call development; but he thought they might not
respond. He was right: several days have passed and I have heard nothing.
I tried using the full CD on my wife's machine. Again, it installs and
works flawlessly; on mine, no cigar.
Does anyone have any tips?

Taking the error message at its word suggests that your CD drive
does not successfully read all the files on the CD, but your wife's
does. I'd try (1) copy the CD on her computer or (2) Copy the CD to
her hard disk, transfer the files to your HDD, and install from
those.

It may be a problem with Windows Registry settings that weren't cleared when you did an
uninstall. Go to http://www2.jasc.com/pub/ and download the zapjasc.exe program. Run
that program to uninstall your old version of PSP. Then install PSP X.

| Thanks for the suggestions. No luck yet, though...

| Just got mine working. Whoopee!!
A file "PR10.dta" was not installed; I found it by comparing my installation
to a working one. You put the file in the folder where Corel Paint Shop Pro
programs reside. On my machine it is "C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint
Shop Pro X\". To get the file to copy in correctly, I had to 1st reset the
attributes for this directory; you right click on the directory, choose
properties, security, and click on the full control box. Then copy in the
file. Then Paint Shop Pro X ran fine.
I can't believe Corel support does not know about this problem. One woman
wrote me with same problem; Corel support sent the exact same "support" note
that they sent me, which accomplished nothing.
I am writing Corel Support and informing them directly; hopefully they will
know what to say in the future.

Nice catch! It's a rare problem, but who knows how many future
customers will benefit from your persistence? Thank you for
notifying tech support.

Jay - I had the same problem with the same error message and the same
attempt at help from Corel tech support. I purchased the downloaded
file and tried to install then start it up when the error message
appeared. Where can I get the .dta file in order to install it in the
right directory?
