saving clear tiny text

| I'm trying to make some fun icons about 100x100 pixels, and trying to
put between a 5-7 size font on them. I have been using the simplest of
simple fonts, with just the basic text format, and no matter how clear
and readable it looks in psp, after I save the image and reopen it,
the font becomes fuzzy.
I have tried saving as .gif, .png, and .jpeg; all of them give the
same exact result. I'm wondering if there is some kind of save setting
that maybe I'm missing. I know when applying color palettes, there's
something as simple as checking the error diffusion dithering or
nearest color option, which can make a big difference.
Does anyone have any suggestions for not losing the integrity of clear
tiny text after saving?

| Try this:
Before placing text, on the tool options, choose AntiAlian="none"...
Then add your text...

And be careful with your choce of font. With a little Googling you'll find
some that are designed especially for tiny text.
Also compression artifacts may cause problems with JPEGs... lower the
compression and use 1x1 1x1 1x1 chroma subsampling to minimize the effect.

100X100 pixels simply isn't enough to show more than a few
characters clearly. From the width and hight of a character
relative to the width and height of the image, you can
easily see how many pixels wide and high the character is.
Try to ink in equivalent boxes in a graph to see the effect.

Using PSP5 and a font called smalle.fon:
http://cris.com/~rsimon/smalltext.gif
Unfortuately, PSP stopped supporting bitmapped fonts in version 6. Since
then, there's been a recurring debate that pops up every now and then as to
whether the later versions can produce "just as good" small font
representations using true type fonts. Personally, I still tend to think
that the old bitmapped fonts that were specifically designed for small text
sizes do a little better job of it, but I'll readily admit that the
differences aren't all that great.

Google for "pixel fonts" and see if they will work for you.

Silkscreen http://www.kottke.org/plus/type/silkscreen/ is a similar
TrueType one, free.

Yeah, I've also got that one here. Unfortunately it only supports upper
case and the letter spacing is a bit broad for my tastes, though the latter
can be dealt with by customizing the Kerning value. The price is certainly
right though! <<smile>>

| I have found it effective to start with a working space twice or three times
the size that I want the result to be, place the text there with the tricks
the others have suggested to you and then downsize the image size to the
size you want.
