Informal Poll about PSP Versions

| COMPILATION OF ANSWERS TO THREAD ABOUT PSP VERSIONS
in newsgroup <comp.graphics.apps.paint-shop-pro)
(cross-posted to <comp.graphics.apps.paint-shop-pro> and
<corel.PaintShopProPhotoX2>.
The question was: "How many of you have installed PSPPX2? "
There were eight respondents, some of whom listed the other versions on
their hard drives as well:
JoeB, Gail, Trev, Dave, Vern, Cliff, Rick and Jeanne
These PSP versions are on their hard drives:
PSP 5 1PSP 7 5
PSP 8 4
PSP 9 6
PSP X 4
PSP XI 1
PSPPX2 trial 1
PSPPX2 registered 3
PSPPX2 tried & uninstalled 2
This is not intended to be a scientific study but I thought it was
interesting enough to post.

| PSP 9. I bought PSP X and XI, but after reading about them, didn't install
either.
I took a pass on PSP XII and haven't bought it.

| I have used PSP since vers 4 when it was under the Jasc Software
umbrella of photo editing apps.. I upgraded to every new version
when it debuted until it was stolen by Corel and plagiarized into its
present state. I even tried PSPX and hated it so much, I erased
it from my computer and returned to what I consider the epitome
of Jasc's pure product, vers 9.01.
Corel? Who needs 'em?

Corel neither stole nor plagiarized PSP, they bought Jasc Software
lock. stock, barrel and programmers for a sizeable chunk of change.
The PSP division of Corel is still located in Eden Prairie MN.

PSP9 was developed before the Jasc sale but it was developed with an
eye to making Jasc a more attractive commodity on the market,
negotiations predated the actual purchase and cast a shadow on the
developement of PSP9.

| Corel may have bought it, but as far as I'm concerned, they stole
it becasue their product, Corel Paint, couldn't compete with it. Now
Jasc's internal codes and apps reside inside Paint and in the product
they call PSP, but it will never work as well as the original product.
Call me a died-in-the-wool Jasc user, but that is my choice. I simply
believe Jasc's version is a much better one and will continue to use
it until something better than it comes along. And believe me, Corel
will not produce it!

There was/is nothing wrong with PhotoPaint excpet that it lacked bells and
whistles. That can be translated as "hopelessly old-fashioned" by some,
but I never felt cheated for having it in Corel Sraw, which is MILES ahead
of PSP's vector capabilities.
Pity it doesn't export gracefully, at least up to CD12, which is what I have.
But neither does PSP.

There has been no crossover between PhotoPaint and Paint Shop Pro,
they don't share any code.

I have no idea whether or not Corel will produce anything better than
PSP9 or 8, PSPX2 has some minor new features and improvements. As to
something better coming along it already has, it's called Photoshop
:).

I'm in the process of evaluating whether to go with PSP8 or PSP9.
Am currently a PSP7 user and have been ever since it was available
in retail stores. What hardware requirements do v8 and v9 show on the
box? I've read 500MHz CPU for v8 and 300MHz for v9. Current platform
is dual 500MHz Xeon workstation.

System reqirements for -
PSP 8 -
http://support.corel.com/scripts/ri...p_faqid=756654.
PSP 9 -
http://support.corel.com/scripts/ri...p_faqid=758176.
The trial versions are still available for download too -
PSP 8.10 - http://ftp.jasc.com/pub/en/psp810entr.exe.
PSP 9.01 - http://ftp.jasc.com/pub/en/psp901entr.exe.
Also well worth reading are Suz Shook's PSP 8 and 9 tips -
http://users.adelphia.net/~suzshook/.
You can have them both installed at the same time. Neither is still
available for retail sale, so you won't be able to activate the trial
versions, and if you want to buy a copy, you'll need to track down a
second hand or remaindered stock copy.

If you system meets the requirements, you might as well go for v.9 rather
than v.8. It does have a somewhat different layout, but also several new
features. Digital Camera Noise Removal and Chromatic Abberation removal
are 2 good ones for the digital photographer, and the Selective History
Undo is also a good new feature in v.9.

V8 doesn't specify, and v9 says 300 MHz. Dual 500 MHz Xeons will
handle v9, but I recall running the betas some years ago on this box
and found them to be slow. The object here is to prepare for `future
platforms.´ :))

Thanks.. these links aren't as expected. Recently someone posted
a site that had all the PSP trial version for download. I'll look back
for the thread, but any link is appreciated.

I intended to add the recent posts but I've run out of time. Going out of
town.
Jim wrote "I am however curious as to what is the point of this "poll",
Jeanne?
Two points: Curiosity and trying to "rev" up more action in this newsgroup.
It worked!
Jim also asked "Have you or anyone else been able to draw any meaningful
conclusions from the reactions?"
I don't know how meaningful, but there were some interesting observations:
PSP users go 'way back! All the way to v5.
PSP users have been, for the most part, loyal and enthusiastic up until the
Corel buyout.
They tend to keep several versions on their hard drives.
They are not bulldozed by "the latest and greatest" publicity, but tend to
hang onto their current versions until they are convinced that the new one
has something important for them.
Versions 7 and 9 seem to have the most votes in the "favorite" category.
As Tim said, Version X1 seems to be the least favorite. That being so, I
did notice that there are LOTS of vX1 being used!
They share their castoffs with friends and family.
Hope I didn't miss something important!
If anyone wants to keep up with the numbers and post them, please do. There
seems to be a lot of interest in the subject.
LET'S HEAR IT FOR PSP USERS! WE'RE GOOOOOD!

I have V5 and V9. I was horrified by how slow and clunky V9 was, and
when I wrote to corel support they replied that it was a more up to
date programme with more features so I should expect it to be slower!
I have toyed with the idea of buying X2, but am very reluctant after
the disappointment of V9. That said, the one-fix photo button on V9
works well enough to dress up family snapshots, and recently made
usable a whole series of photos taken inside a marquee, which had
turned the sunlight yellow.
I can't double-click on a photo to edit it - the file associations
open V9 but I get a dialogue box saying that the file is missing. I
can drag-and-drop it into V9 once open. I suspect this is a windows
problem, rather than a corel problem though. I have heard of people
having this trouble with OpenOffice.org and with RealAudio - all three
of which are not made by m$ !

| I am currently using PSP 9, although I had PSP 10 on the machine for a
while. Not sure why, but I always had crashes with PSP 10 or lockups. Until
I decided to dump it and stick with PSP 9, I had played around with PSP 10
for a bit and did actually find some items in it that I preferred. One big
improvement IMHO was the red eye removal tool. They had done something to it
that made it much easier and better to use than the one present in PSP 9. It
was a bit annoying to have to mess with the customisation in PSP 10 to bring
back some of the more useful tools that Corel had banished to the depths of
the program, but after that it was ok.
If it had not been for the instability, I would have stayed with PSP 10, but
now I only use PSP 9.
Before that, I have used PSP 5, 6, 7 and 8.

I do exactly the same, most simple editing done in V5, but I
use V8 for sprucing up photos.

But many programs *do* work, all problems are not AUTOMATICALLY the
fault of MS.
(Prediction: I'll now get a long list of things which don't work and
no examples of things which do work because its less fun to say
something works...)

I have a few newer versions somewhere but after
talking to some friends & reading about them, have
never installed them ...
I'm still w/ Paint Shop Pro 3.12 ... it does exactly
what I want it to do w/ the pics I scan ... I use an
old version of LView Pro for color correcting, use
PhotoShop or Corel Photo-Paint for some texture
& framing effects, convert to jpg's in PS ...
Texting on indexes is done in Photo Shop but
sometimes I use PSP to add a few frills ...

Thanks, Jeanne, but it really isn't about loyalty ... I look
for software which does what I want to do, that's all ...

And to you, Dave/GrumpMaster, it has absolutely
NOTHING to do w/ loyalty ... I use what does the
job ...
I scan lots of art, illustrative art, & photos which
I post everyday, so use the software which gives
me a good scan, true to what I'm scanning ...from
the comments I get from my friends & 'collectors',
I'd say the software I use is doing a good job ...
Think I'd call myself smart & practical, rather than
a Luddite ;-)
Now, when it comes to cameras, if I should post
photos w/ the one I have, you definitely would be
able to call me a Luddite!
I therefore promise not to post photos until I get a
new camera ;-)
